Guest guest
HI ALL, I WILL BE HAVING LAP RNY IN SEPT. I AM TOLD THAT WE CAN'T DRINK SODA (UNLESS IT'S FLAT), BUT I AM HEARING ABOUT PEOPLE DRINKING IT. SO, WHAT'S THE STORY? YES, NO? Guest guest
I'm sorry to disagree, but you can have sodas after surgery. It's totally dependent upon your own choosing of course, but you can physically have them. But you do have to have them flat. I drink about 1 20oz bottle per week or two weeks. That is my only treat for myself now. It does have to stand in the fridge for about 30 minutes but it is possible. It's the carbonation that is the problem, not the soda its self. If you let it go flat, there is no problem. Re: SODA I have asked this question so many times and the answer is always the same. You can never have carbonated drinks again. The psychologist I had to see said that he knows personally of people who died from drinking sodas after wls. My sister is horrible about drinking them and always wonders why she is so sick in her stomach. When I told her what he said she simply said well I have other friends that drink it,like that made it ok, well duhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I don't think so!!!!!!! Personally I wouldn't jeapordize my health for them. Wolf

Guest guest
Lori Anne, You kill me, you really do! LMAO. I just need that extra kick every once in a while. And it doesn't go completely flat, just 99%. I have always been a soda drinker and before surgery it was ALL I drank. Diet Vanilla Coke was my salvation. I don't drink coffee or tea because I can't stand the stuff so the soda was all I had. Now, it's a treat to have 2 oz every four or five days. I think it tastes great! :-) Re: SODA In a message dated 8/10/2003 2:46:35 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Leeds@... writes: > It's the carbonation that is the problem, not the soda its > self. Guest guest
Our Dietician and Surgeon put it this way... Yes, you can have diet soda after sugery, flat or carbonated. Its not what you can and can't necessarily have post-op, but what you CHOOSE to have or not have. Look at our discussion about the post-op woman who put on extra weight because of non-compliance. Our dietician said that you could let the soda lose its carbonation this time, then as time goes by you could start thinking that leaving a little extra carbonation probably wouldn't hurt anything, then a little more gets left in, then... you get the drift, until finally you are back to drinking your soda fully carbonated. Its all about changing those past addictions (including food, soda, caffiene, etc) to increase our quality of life and improve our health. Think about WHY you need that soda so badly, you are even willing to drink it flat (ick). And yes, I am speaking to myself here and you all get to listen in, because I have a terrible addiction to food that I need to control. On a side note, my surgeon stated that in the worst cases of weight regain that he has seen in his bariatric surgery career 100% of those people went back to drinking carbonated soda after surgery. Something (calorie free) to chew on. Toi

Guest guest
When i was pre-op i went to two support group meetings. I always drank fountain Diet Coke. i was addicted. I made sure i didnt take that to the meeting and bought a water instead. The last meeting i went to, a girl walked in and had one of those large cups from 7-11, my mouth dropped open. I said, i thought we couldnt have diet pop after surgery, she said.. i have been having it just fine. I agree with Toi, I am going to stay away. I dont want to even go back to a tiny bit of my old bad habits after going thru all this. Guest guest
I've heard that you can't have it unless it is flat. YUK, why bother!?! I do know of wls patients who drink it and have no problems. I personally stay away from it and don't even want to get in the habit of having it. I have also " heard " that it stretches out the pouch. Can anyone confirm that or is it a myth? Thanks. Take Care, Open RYN 4-7-03 351/281/???
