Guest guest
Hi! My kids have been on SCD since December 1. We are not progressing as quickly as I would have hoped, and I am simply confused. My children are stuck in phase 1 of the diet. We can't seem to get beyond it. They eat eggs, chicken, hamburger, squash, stewed prunes -- due to irregular bowels that are sometimes impacted -- and pearsauce everyday (everything pureed, chicken shredded, eggs scrambled). Carrots come out in their stool looking as it did when it when it entered (pureed mush) and green beans do the same. Their stools are very inconsistent. Sometimes they get very constipated. Then after they pass the initial " blockage " they will have diarrhea with undigested food particles. Am I missing something? What is going on here that I am not getting? Last night my infant (15 mo.) passed a stool with a tiny amount of undigested eggs! I think she has probably developed an allergy to most of these things we are eating since she has severe leaky gut and we are eating these foods everyday. Is it possible that I am not seeing more progress because she is allergic to these intro. foods (ie. eggs)? What is the solution here? I really feel like I need to do some type of rotation thing, but I can't when we don't have enough choices to rotate at this point. Please give some guidance. Do I throw out this intro/progressive stuff and just jump into SCD as if we could tolerate everything, giving me some rotation options? Do I keep introducing foods one at a time, meanwhile developing allergies due to the slow pace of all this? My older kids take Houston AFP enzymes as well as No-Fenol. Our nutritionist and DAN, who are pro-SCD, do not want my baby on enzymes yet. I think they believe it could irritate her gut more since her gut is in the worst condition and some kids, when they are that bad off, cannot tolerate enzymes. I would appreciate any input. Feel free to e-mail me personally if that seems more appropriate due to length of response or whatever . . . jlknopp@.... Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Sheila! Thanks for inquiring further. My infant's (15 mo.) stools were consistent, coming once or twice a day. In general they were gritty, color depending on what she ate, and the consistency of mush that would hold its shape. Currently, we have to induce a bowel with a suppository almost every day. However, they are a good, formed consistency (with sections that might be a little impacted or diarrhea), various colors throughout the stool, and minor amounts of undigested pureed food. So far we get undigested carrots, green beans, peas, and now miniscule amounts of scrambled egg when I give them to her. We are trying zucchini right now. I should know by tomorrow how she is tolerating them. My son, 3 yr. old, had stools that swung between diarrhea and constipation pre-SCD. He had undigested food pre-SCD as well. The colors ranged from grey to green to dark brown. His stools are still varying in consistency (most likely due to the supplements we are also introducing slowly at this time). The colors tend to be more light brown and dark brown with occasional green. The part that bothers me is that I will still find some undigested particles in his stool. Right now he will pass some undigested prune skins and undigested pea skins as well as sections of stool showing bright orange from pureed carrots when I give them these foods. My daughter, 5 yr. old, has the same stool patterns as my son; however, she seems to have less undigested food. I do think we are improving since we started SCD. My question relates to moving on. Are we seeing enough progress to warrant moving past phase 1? I don't understand when you can feel you have a " green light " for moving on. As I said, we still have some undigested food and some weird bowel consistencies. Are we supposed to wait for NO UNDIGESTED FOOD and completely formed stools all the time? I am fairly certain my infant has developed an egg sensitivity, so I am a bit anxious. I don't like the idea of feeding them the same foods everyday because of the possibility of my guys developing these sensitivities. Do you have any advice? Thanks! Jeni Lynn Re: what do i do? Guest guest
Probiotic Synergy Powder Probiotic Synergy combines the most important beneficial bacterial strains in a single product. Our probiotic strains yield a full 10 billion count per gram at time of manufacture. Dairy based, but only a small amount of dairy protein is present, so this product is often tolerated even by the dairy sensitive. Dairy sensitive individuals should use this product with the guidance of their health care practitioner. Size: 125 grams/4.4 ounces powder Each half teaspoon provides: Lactobacillus acidophilus 10 billion Bifidobacterium bifidum 10 billion Lactobacillus bulgaricus 2 billion Lactobacillus brevis 2 billion Other ingredients: maltodextrin (corn). This product is not SCD legal. It contains bifidus strains of bacteria, plus is has maltodextrin-corn based. It is also not dairy free if dairy is an issue. Many people have had trouble with bifidus containing probiotics. Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/

Guest guest
Dear Jody, I am not sure we are referring to the same product. Mine is Probiotic Synergy Powder. It looks like it is made by Designs for Health but distributed by Living Well Today. It says it has 20 billion organisms per serving. It does contain lactobacilus acidophilus, lactobacilus paracasei, lactobacilus plantarum, bifidobacterium longum, bifidobacterium infantis, and bifidobacterium lactis. I have no idea what any of these things are. I assume they are illegal since they are basically the same as the stuff you mentioned. There is also rice maltodextrin. This is illegal too, isn't it? Ok. So to clarify . . . you are implying that we are not seeing as much healing / progress due to the probiotic? So is it safe to assume your advice is not to rotate foods to try and avoid allergy / sensitivities but to lose the probiotic? Jeni Lynn SCD over 1 month Re: what do i do? Guest guest
Jeni Lyn, Perhaps there are different formulations that have similar names. I'm sorry if I found the wrong one, but from what you just listed the probiotic you are using does contain bifidus. I don't honestly know what you are not seeing the progress you are hoping for. It's all very complex. But I will say that many adults have reported terrible trouble when using probiotics with bifidus in them. The easiest way to find out if it is a problem, is to remove it for a week and see if things improve. They are both also taking a huge list of things, not all things that I have heard of or am familiar with. So, it is difficult to know if any of the other things that they are taking is interferring with gut healing. I know that the TD chelation cuts down on gut problems, but I think that it is still an issue for some kids. It is possible that it could be contributing to slow gut healing as well. I am not recommending that you stop chelating. That is between you and your kids' doctor, but I would remove the probiotic for a week to see if it helps.
