Hi Tummy,

I may get nailed for this but once a long time ago I was getting morphine

injections for pain (recovery from a modified Whipple procedure), while this

went on for only a little over a week and was then switched to oral codeine

(Emprin 4's), I felt I went through a little withdrawal symptoms. On one hand

there was a lot going on and many other contributing aspects and I really got

along fine. On the other hand I became very aware of the addictive power of

narcotics. Bottom line, maybe the aspect that is the most important is that

if you want to really get better then you can learn to live with a little

temporary pain in order to achieve a higher goal of recovery. I certainly am

for the proper use of narcotics, and I currently use narcotics with

regularity as needed now, they most certainly have a fine medical use. But

one must be careful to use them in a timely, purposeful, manner for medical

purposes. FWIW, last Friday I avoided using narcotics too long and had the

worst PC attack than I have had for several months. Almost went to the ER. I

do know and recommend that one must learn to get ahead and stay ahead of the

pain of PC or you can easily lose that battle.

Tummy,

I think your doctor sounds like a very wise person. I might

question a bit the words " no one " and " ever " , those sound a bit

too definitive, but overall his attitude is one that I've seen a few

other doctors echo. My GI says about the same. I think the

whole key to this are the words " in moderation " , and to medicate

wisely to relieve pain, and for no other reason.

I think the correct percentage is about 1% that get addicted from taking

pain meds. I know most of us would like to NEVER see a pain med in our lives

again if that were possible. Taking pain meds is no fun (Which doesn't mean

we aren't absolutely thankful for having them) and psychologically for most

if us, there is no high or " joy " in taking these things. It's a necessary

evil that we all put up with. Of course, you have to be lying on the floor

(or couch, or bed or anywhere else) in absolute agony to appreciate what a

pain med can do. I suppose that's why people who aren't in chronic pain

don't understand us very well sometimes.

Jerry, you hit that right on the head. People that are in chronic pain,

take just enough meds to get the breakthru. People who abuse drugs just

want the high.

I've recently had some problems getting my pain meds. I saw a pain

mgmt. specialist a few months ago, and he sent a recommendation to my

family doc to start oxycontin every 8 hrs & stadol NS for

breakthrough pain. When I'm having such a bad attack, like the last

3 weeks, I can only use the stadol nasal spray because nothing else

will stay down. My doc has it written that I can use 1 spray every 3-

4 hrs. as needed. There are only 14-15 sprays in a bottle, so if I

took it as directed then I'd run out in 2 1/2 days! My home care

nurse called my pharmacy to find out why they wouldn't refill it when

I use it as directed & also ask if it was a law thing or the

pharmacist judgement.......they said it was the pharmacist's

judgement, that she was afraid I would come " addicted " to it if I

took it that often. The home care nurse chewed her out! And now

instead of having to wait 7 days for a refill, she gives it to me in

5, whew~whew! Just wanted to share that story with you all. Lots of

hugs,

I am sorry that you have had some problems lately but I am glad that you are

doing all right. I do hope that your SSI goes through this time. Sometimes

it is unbelievable what this govt will do to us sick people. My prayers are

with you and your family.

Thanks Poncho and all others who gave me feedback on the morphine

issue. I am not taking it daily as he recommended but I am taking it

when it gets too difficult to deal with. I'm just too nervous. I know

the idea is to keep on top of the pain and not have to play catch up

with it but I feel that some pain can be tolerated. My other concern

is that he did not want to give me anything for the lesser pain days.

He said T3's would make things worse because of the codeine but id

does seem that some of you can tolerate codeine alright? Or am I

wrong in this?? I'm not sure what else is safe to use. What about

ibuprophen and stuff like that?? I'm not talking severe pain, I'm

talking the inbetween pain.

Today I'm starting on MSM and enzymes so I'm really hoping this is

going to be of help too. Thanks so much to everyone for the input!!

Hugs and may you all feel just a bit better today....Tummy

(from Poncho)

.....I felt I went through a little withdrawal symptoms.
