Guest guest
Hi, , Thanks for your response - it is very reassuring to know that we are not alone in this. And yes, Jake is also allergic/intolerant to dairy as well as corn. We've just never challenged it because he tested as a true allergy to it, as opposed to the corn just being observationally a problem. Doesn't it make you wonder, though, how many kids are out there like my Jake and your Drew whose parents do NOT look into the food/behaviour link? I feel bad for those kids. I'm not being judgemental, as I feel our medical system lacks unbelievably in this area, and that many parents just are not informed/educated. It is such a shame. So are you saying that all symptoms of his ADHD are eliminated with diet? If you are, that is just fabulous, even if they are controlled to a point where it is not an issue. I know with Jake we simply consider him food allergic/intolerant, as he has no issues as long as he avoids his problem foods. I agree with your TV stance as well - my dudes are only allowed to watch TV on Saturday mornings as a special treat. Otherwise, the TV is dark. Therefore, I have two dudes that know how to entertain themselves, are very interested in books, and are very imaginative. It's nice. Cheers to you, ! I'm so glad Drew has you for a mommy so that he can thrive and develop to his full potential. He's so fortunate! Love, Heidi, mom to Cal, 6, stomach of steel, and Jake, 3-1/2, celiac, allergic to dairy, pollen, dust mites and wife to Jeff, super dad and hubby living healthy and happy in Massachusetts P.S. Kudos to you, too, Alyssa, for running such a great, intimate group here. > Anyhow I thought I'd add our experiences with the allergy/behavior link. > >
Guest guest
You know, I might totally take away all the dairy....hmm.. I have been giving it to him in little quantities, because it only causes him eczema, and if I give it to him in small quantities, then he seems to be ok.. How do you all that can't have dairy, give their child their needed calcium? I bought some calcium fortified white grape juice, but he doesn't care for it too much. Also, he eats brocolli, but I can't make it for every meal lol..What do you all do? Alyssa Food allergies and behavior problems I'm still awake! He literally turns from Dr. Jekyl into Mr. Hyde (or vice versa, which ever is good to bad). It's incredible to watch. We think he is outgrowning chocolate, but I still limit it because it is such a horrible thing to endure. Guest guest
You know, I read this email..and I thought ok..hmm..I will do a test with my son. I gave him an Oatmeal cookie one time and he was a little hyper but nothing major. Well, I made Chocolate Crinkle cookies and gave him one and he was bouncing off the wall! I wonder if he reacts to the cocoa for the hyperness. I am doing another trial run on it. Unfortunatley, I won't keep him from the homemade chocolate cookies because it is one sweet that he can actually have..but at least I will know what to expect lol. Guest guest
Ugh. Life has been crazy around here. The boys are doing their best to bug each other to death, which means they whine about what the other did all day long! has gone from a runny nose to a nasty cough and wants to be held all day. She gets mad when it is time to nurse because I have to suction her nose before and at least one time when she eats. Poor thing! If she isn't feeling better in a day or two I'm going to take her in. She is coming up with new words though! Too bad I have NO clue what she is saying (she says the same thing, with the same inflection all the time). So on the behavior changing with foods issue. Someone recommended a book called Is This Your Child? Doris Rapp, MD I got it when we started to suspect Drew had a dairy allergy. Circles under the eyes, eczema that got worse as the amount of dairy increased, out of control behavior, irrational behavior (full out temper tantrum because you didn't get him juice fast enough), etc. I suggest checking the library to see if they have it or buying it. It was an interesting read. It talks about the Feingold diet and gives suggestions on making sure you child is getting full nutrition despite there allergies. Ugh. There was something else I was going to say? Oh, , if you suspect an allergy and you are not getting the answers you are looking for keep going!!!! Keep pushing until you get the help you need. There is a board for kids allergies at www.parentsplace.com/messageboards You might be able to find a recommendation for a Dr. there. HTH a little. ----- Original Message ----- You know, I might totally take away all the dairy....hmm.. Guest guest
Alyssa, You had asked how we give our kids the calcium they are lacking from their dairy free diets....I give Josie rice milk which has more calcium than milk. I also give her daily vitamins with extra calcium. Anything I can get her with extra calcium, I do. My question is how do I give Josie the fat she is missing from her diet by not drinking whole milk. She's 15 months old and weighs 18 lbs 11 oz. (7th percentile) At her 12 month visit, she was 19 lbs 13 oz. In addition to her allergies to milk, egg, nuts & beef, she's also a picky eater! Any suggestions would be great! Take care all! Missy Oakdale, MN

Guest guest
Re: chocolate. Starting at the age of 4 our darling angel, that never got into any trouble, all of a sudden began to be a demon. He would often seemingly go into a rage for no apparent reason. We never realized WHY would go into a rage. I had him to the pediatrician over it more than once and got a referral to a pshychologist, but never had the heart to take him. I kept thinking " I don't want to lable him as a psycho, we have to find another way to deal with this. " Around age 6 w started to notice a huge coincedence - it seemed to happen a lot after t-ball games. Strange? I racked my brain trying to find out why a t-ball game would send him over edge. Ultimately I figured he had his melt downs because he was overly tired after being in 1st grade all day, then having to be up past his bedtime, playing a game. Made sense to me. It was a few weeks later we had him tested because of his asthma had continued to worsen. The allergist suggested we test for several food allergens, too. I'm glad she did. Among a few others positive foods, chocolate popped up. It surprised me. I told the doctor that there was no way he could be allergic to chocolate because he ate it all the time with no reaction. " NO reaction? " She said " Are you sure? " I said .... well, he never gets hives or rashes or vomits or wheezes after he eats chocolate. I don't notice any reaction. .... THEN she said something that hit the nail on the head .... she said does he go form Dr. Jekyl in to Mr. Hyde? Does he have quick onset fits of rage? IT WAS LIKE A LIGHTBULB - or as Oprah says " an ah-ha moment " . It hit me! That's why he was so uncontrollable after t-ball games! After EVERY t-ball game, the coach rewarded them with a chocolate bar and juice box! He would eat the whole candy bar on the way home in the car and by the time we got home he was totally out of control. He would scream, kick, hit, bite! He broke both windows in his bedroom (with his feet!) and one night and pulled the mattress off the bed, all of the drawers out of the dresser and threw his clothes all around, etc. It was BAAAAAD! Needless to say, after my " ah-ha moment " we avoided chocolate for the next several weeks and turned back into the sweet little boy we remembered. It was amazing! After several weeks of NO chocolate, I decided to " test " him. I let him eat a whole bag of M&Ms. Sure enough! Within 30 minutes he was an animal! Scary! I never knew a food allergy could effect a child like that! Makes me wonder about some kids on ritilyn or bi-polar medication .... could it just be something they are eating? Now at age 12, he still avoids chocolate mostly. Every once in a blue moon, I'll let him have A bite of something chocolate (because he LOVES and misses it). NOrmally one bite won't effect him. Not long ago (about a year ago) I allowed him to have 2 brownies (just to see if it was still a problem) and he turned into the biggest smartass, mouthing, cursing at me, etc. Almost like a teenager on drugs type attitude. He's quite a comic .... just last night, with the war going on and all, he said " Mom, Pres. Bush needs to fill me with about 10 Hershey bars and let me at Sadaam! " LOL! At least he has a sense of humor about it. Hope this helps those of you that wonder " why is my kid acting like this " You never know ....... it's worth looking into. Guest guest
Hi Missy!!!!!! How are you doing? Do they sell any rice milk that is already cold, or is it only the stuff that is on the shelf and not in the cold section? What daily vitamin do you give her? I was checking out the ones at the grocery store, because I haven't been able to go to the health food store yet..it is 35 minutes away, and I haven't really found one. We keep away from soy because he has a sensitivity to it. It causes him eczema and the ones at the store have soy protein in it. I guess I will have to make it to the health food store this week lol. I am really not too sure about the fat that she is missing...I will do some research! My favorite thing to do LOL! I love researching things. I have learned so much by researching allergies! It is great! Anyway, you take care and I will let you know what I find! Have a great day! Alyssa Re: Food allergies and behavior problems Alyssa, You had asked how we give our kids the calcium they are lacking from their dairy free diets....I give Josie rice milk which has more calcium than milk. I also give her daily vitamins with extra calcium. Anything I can get her with extra calcium, I do.My question is how do I give Josie the fat she is missing from her diet by not drinking whole milk. She's 15 months old and weighs 18 lbs 11 oz. (7th percentile) At her 12 month visit, she was 19 lbs 13 oz.
