know where to start! How much, what should I buy, how do I fix

it????? I have a million questions.................I would love any

Congratulations on your surgery date, Annie! Will you be having a

distal or proximal?

I would suggest that you go to www.vitalady.com and order some

samples. (who owns the site) carries only the proteins that

are good for us. You can order samples from her for $1.99 each so you

don't have to get a big tub and then find out you don't like it. Once

you find one or two you like, you can order a larger amount. Be aware

that just because you like one flavor in a particular brand, you

might not like another flavor in that brand. also carries

all the vitamins and minerals that we need after surgery.

Some of the popular brands/flavors are: ProScore 100 in chocolate

(thickest of the shakes), chocolate Pure Whey Stack (my personal

favorite - mixes very easily when shaken in a bottle which is

important if you work - and tastes great!), ProBlend 55 in Mocha

Cappuccino and Alpine Vanilla, HDT 5+1 in Banana, and the new Nectars

in Apple (I love this one for a nice change), Berry Cherry and

Caribbean Cooler (sort of a pina colada flavor). It is best to mix

only with water (not milk as it adds too much sugar). They can be

flavored with sugar free syrups like the ones that carries.

(I really like the Kaluhi flavor -it's like Kahlua flavored liquor. A

teaspoon of peanut butter in it before you blend it is also good. But

try the samples plain first to try and find one that you like on it's

own.

I used one shake a day pre-op for several months. Then about 3 weeks

before surgery, I upped it to 2 shakes a day. I really believe it

helped and so does my surgeon.

Ask away on your millions of questions. After all, we only have less

than 2 months to answer them and that's allot of questions! LOL

Hi, everyone! I'm a newbie to this group. I was wondering how many

grams of protein

I should be getting in each day if I had a Distal Open RNY (my

surgeon said he

bypassed 9 feet of intestine?). I'm almost 7 mos post-op & my weight

loss has slowed

down big time lately. I've always thought of myself as a " slow loser "

from the very

beginning (& I started on the higher end of the scale), but lately

the scale's been

moving @ a snail's pace. I do pretty good w/ my water (@ least 64 oz

per day) & doing

much better @ staying away from the carbs then I was in the

beginning. Also do you

guys count the protein you intake from food? How about protein bars?

Or do you just

count your protein per day from shakes only? I want to make sure I

get to where I

need to be during my " window of opportunity " to lose the weight. I'd

like to lose @

least -170 to -180 lbs total (could lose -200 lbs even). I used to do

more protein

shakes in the beginning & have been slacking on them lately. Does

drinking the

protein shakes kick in the weight loss again? I currently have a big

jug of the Double

Rich Chocolate 100% Whey Protein by Optimum Nutrition that I got from

GNC (that I

don't really like...too " whey-ey " ) & I have the Chocolate Carb

Solutions shake mix too,

it's not bad. I preferred to mix them w/ Skim Milk but is that a

no-no? Thanks for any

advice you " protein pros " can give me...

I'm distal, and do usually between 6-8, 30 gm servings daily. Lately, I have

been slipping a bit...and skipping one here and there. It REALLY shows. I

find I am wanting what it is I am craving most these days, and that is

oranges. Can you say...SUGAR?? My weight has not increased, but for some

odd reason, my pants feel a little tighter today. So....as of today, I'm

back on them, every 2 hours....my cravings have disappeared, and I know in a

couple of days, my pants will be loose again. I don't know how people do it

that don't do their protein. I'd be going crazy over food cravings...as just

sloughing off a bit has proven to me. I count only the protein in shakes,

since I have no inkling how much is absorbed from food, since we don't have

the duodenum to absorb food protein with. So, if I get some from food...well

and good, but I'm not counting on it.

I think actually, whole milk may have a bit less sugar than skim....but all

has too much. Will definitely slow your weight loss if you are using them in

your shakes. I was doing two a day with 1/2 banana and strawberries.....just

for a treat....and when I cut it out...my weight dropped 4 lbs!! I didn't

need to lose those 4 lbs...but now, I sure don't want to take them back. So,

do the shakes with water, ice and sf flavorings if you really want to stay on

track.

Regards~

Lots of surgeons do, :)

There are a few hold-outs who are " against " protein shakes, thinking

we are drinking the sugar shakes with a pinch of protein (Boost,

Ensure, Slimfast), and that is their reasoning for being so anti-

protein shake. Then there are those who think we are drinking

the " ultra weight gainers " shakes with 2000+ calories, LOL. Other

anti-shake docs think we are replacing our meals with shakes and have

stopped eating. They all have their reasoning for being against

shakes, but you know what? Every year, more and more bariatric

surgeons are not only recommending protein shakes, but REQUIRING them

for their patients. So the tide is turning. But just like

everything else in medicine, it takes forever!

Remember the first doc who insisted one must wash their hands

frequently and between every procedure? He was almost laughed out of

medicine. I can't remember his name right now, but he was a

laughingstock and considered a quack for years and years. Now every

doctor on the planet, even in developing countries, knows they must

wash their hands constantly.

It just takes time, and we're winning the war, one surgeon at a time.

Felicia :)

PS: I have been talking to privately as well, for those of you

interested in what became of our conversation yesterday. She is

getting on the *healthy* track now!!! :)
