Having a rough day today, are we? Being a very new member of this group, I

thought

I would express my experience with it so far (as well as a few other

diabetic-related

thoughts). Take or leave what you will. Maybe the owner and/or moderators will

find

it useful.

I must say, that I agree (and mentioned earlier w/out notice it seems) that

there are

too many recipes posted on this group. I had to go to digest, and it is

difficult

scrolling through them. I very nearly quit for all of them, but decided to stay

for the

support that seems to genuinely be here.

I am sure the recipes are a wonderful resource for many people. But the files

section

is just a click away, and could be a much more useful archive for looking up

wanted

recipes later. Or perhaps, just post a few a week, instead of so many every

day? Just

a suggestion.

As for , I was very taken aback by his initial post to me. I thought I was

being

attacked and belittled at first, and had an emotional response during a

vulnerable

moment. But then I realised he seems to be just a rather intense guy. In most

of his

posts, I don't think he means to offend people. (Sorry to who has to read

this

in the 3rd person and may not be able to respond). But there is an undeniable

aggressiveness that comes through IMO. I rather take it as a 'getting to know

you'

thing in learning how to read what he's trying to say without getting an

emotional

response to what he doesn't mean to do. Again, JMO.

I was raised Jewish, but now consider myself more of a buddhist with neo-pagan

leanings. I too find all the " G-D speak " a bit nauseating. It is not something

I am

accustomed to hearing on any kind of regular basis. But when you are on an

international group, I think it should be understood that people will express

themselves differently. I just feel a little bit like I'm in Salt Lake City

when I read those

posts. :-)

Being a liberal, I enjoyed the anti-Republican jokes very amusing. But if I

were a

Republican, I might think twice about being in such a group!

And for those of you interested...I definitely lost a solid 3.2 lbs last week on

my diet.

I had one slip-up when lunch was delayed and I wound up getting a veggie burger

on

whole grain bread with ketchup (bread and ketchup being big no-nos on the 1st 2

weeks of my diet!). But in the process I discovered I may have an intolerance

to

wheat. I will experiment again in a bit, with different products. It may just

be bread.

But there were, er, gastrointestinal 'rumblings' that I always thought were

dairy-

related. So, nothing quite like getting to know one's own body yet again.

Finally, as a Type 1 diabetic using an insulin pump for going on 2 years now, I

can tell

you irrefutably that we at least use the Basal/Bolus system. You calculate how

much

you need for your basal rates (which change during the day and night and for me

at

different points in my cycle) through trial and error (basal being the basic

miminum

insulin an individual needs to maintain a baseline blood sugar level at optimal

range).

The bolus you use to match insulin needs with food intake (particularly, with

carbohydrates). I can eat whatever I want, whenever I want (or nothing at all

if I want

to skip a meal) so long as I take a bolus that meets my food intake needs. I

can even

program my pump to give me insulin delivery over an extended period of time if I

am

having a high-fat meal (or for those with gastropareisis). I feel

extraordinarily lucky

to have this much freedom. When I took shots I felt trapped by the highs and

lows

every day, feeding the insulin instead of my body. And I frequently had

crashing lows

where I'd hear funny sounds and nearly pass out. Three times I lost my vision

during

a bad low.

When I was taking MDIs, I had to stick to eating about the same amount every

day.

But I would cheat and take extra insulin for treats and snacks and bigger meals,

etc.

Or less insulin if I wasn't hungry. I used to have Hba1c's around 7.5% Now my

Hba1c's average around 6.0, without daily crashes! I am forever thankful.

Well, thanks to whomever read all the way through this long post!

hi gina!

a friend just informed me i'm a social conservative and a political

liberal. i think that is true, and confess to all that, personally,

i find everything startling...and so i do my best to *act, not

react* period. mercy. oh well, can't say i'm going anywhere with

this...

ok. sorry. that's interesting about the MDIs and eating the same

amounts. i wonder if that would help me. my HbA1c's have been 6.5s

so far, since i started insulin therapy...but my control really

isn't tight. so hard to figure out what to do. i keep harping about

this - but they keep changing my thyroid doses, which really effects

my insulin sensitivity.

i wonder if i could do it. am having a hard time keeping just any

kind of schedule.

anyways, v. enlightening.
