Ida,

the abd. cerclage is a pretty involved surgery. doctors prefer to do it as the last resort only. many women who are missing part of their cervix are the ones that get the abd. cerclage. having the abd. cerclage does not guarantee a full term baby. there are many risks involved, as well as the benefits. you have to have a cut placed through your abdomen to get the abd cerclage in place. it is a permanent stitch at the base of your uterus. if the stitch is placed prepregnancy and if you were to decide to do any genetic testing on the child, in case the fetus has a chromosomal abnormality (such as Down's syndrome for example, although there are many others), to terminate such pregnancy you will have to be cut again... Therefore, to me it makes more sense to have the cerclage placed after the pregnancy has been established and after you have determined that the fetus is healthy. of course, that is a very personal decision based on your religious and personal views. you can have genetic testing done at 12 weeks and at 14 weeks have the cerclage placed. for many doctors abd. cerclage is the last resort. most will do it only after other options, such as the vaginal carcelages have failed. one benefit of the abd. is that it is placed much higher than the vaginal cerclage can be placed. that, I believe, improves the chances of success for 95% of women (which is a pretty high).

The reason that I did not care for Dr. Saltzman is because he did not seem to care too much about me as a patient. I think I was just another woman who had been failing getting through her pregnancies (I was pregnant 9 times). When I has asked him how long I should wait before I can get pregnant again since my last loss (which occurred on Nov. 7th of this year) he had told me that I did not have to wait at all. "can try right away", he said. Being in the medical field myself I know that a woman's body has to take the time to recover, both physically and mentally. Getting pregnant too soon can result in an early miscarriage. Dr. Saltzman did not seem to be too concerned about that. And of course I did not like the fact that he wanted to try another vaginal cerclage, although a higher than a "usual vaginal stitch," with me first. If that failed, than he would do the abd. Needless to say, I could not and would not go through another loss of a baby. If I was to get pregnant at all in the future, it will definitely be my last pregnancy. He did not seem to be very sensitive about the emotional aspect of it all.

To answer your last question, most insurances should cover the abd. cerclage if its medically necessary. If the doctor that is doing the surgery accepts your insurance, there should be no problem with the reimbursement for the procedure.

Hope that this helps you to make some future decisions.

Best wishes,

Zhenia

Does it take a loss to convince the dr.

that an ab/cerc. would be of benefit? I would like one pre-pregnancy to

hopefully prevent a loss. Thanks for responding. If it is any consolation,

we had a dog named Tucker that I loved so very much and he passed away this

last year on February 1st. When I saw the name it brought tears to

my eyes. Your Tucker has a nice dog with his name in Heaven.

Ida,

To bad you are not in Florida any more. You

could use my doc they are wonderful. Some times depending on people is o.k. I understand

how you feel about that. I miss cooking so much. You sound much better. you

sound like you have a game plan. The peri you met

last week do they do the ab? It is hard to find a doc

that you can trust. If they tell you do something you must do it b/c they are suppost to be the expert. You are trusting them with your

life and baby. I hope you are having a good day and feeling better.

God bless,

Taryn

Taryn,

I know that the ab/cerc

could end me up on bedrest too, but from what the peri told me last week if I

were to just get pregnant without it I would probably be admitted to the

hospital at 18 weeks and remain there. I just can’t do that because

it is not possible to live in a hospital when I have a toddler and

husband. She told me that she followed an ab/cerc. pregnancy and the

women did great and was only put on bedrest toward the end as a

precaution. I would hope that would be my situation because I have no

network of support here. My family lives around the country. I do

have the support of the Mom’s Club here (70 women) that would make meals,

watch , houseclean, etc… for me if I needed them too. I just

hate to have to depend on people. My Grandma can also come to live with

us. She is 83 years old, but would be a great help. I moved from

Florida in April. I certainly wasn’t thrilled with my Ob there, so

I’m skeptical of doctors at this point. I have to be comfortable

with the dr. that I find for an ab/cerc. I loved the peri that I met with

last week and she would follow a pregnancy no matter what I decide to do.

I’m so grateful for

your help,

Ida

Hi,

I am new to joining an on-line group, so be patient

with me as I learn what I am doing. I found out about Abbyloopers from

Taryn. My name is Ida and I live in Pittsburgh. I am very

interested in learning more about the abdominal cerclage. I'd like to

educate myself about it and also locate doctors in my area that peform the

surgery. I had a cone biopsy done on Valentine's Day this year and most

of my cervix was taken. In order to have a future pregnancy an abdominal

cerclage is a possibility for a successful pregnancy. I have a 22 month

old daughter that I am staying at home raising. I need all the details

about the abdominal cerclage and pregnancy there after in order to make some

decisions. I so desperately want to have another child. I just

don't know how complicated it can be and I don't have a great deal of help

here. I look forward to getting acquainted with other women that can help

me learn more about the abdominal cerclage.

Sincerely,

Ida

I'm not Ida, but I have Christian groups, my church and church organizations

that I belong to for that. I come here to learn about diabetes. I have my

other groups and my " real life " Christians to help me with my spiritual

life. I came to this group for help in saving my life.

I don't really compartmentilize my Christian life. I am very active

in my community in things as well as studies in my home. But, when I

became a diabetic and began glucophage I needed something that would

also instruct me. I am get the spirtual help I need from my church

and my Bible Study groups as well as those lists that are

encouragement and sharing scrptures. What I was looking for was some

information for my life to broaden my knowledge about Diabetis. I

came from a very abusive Church setting that would have brought no

glory to God and when I hear somethings it sends off flags so when

there is a lot of disagreement and such it sort of sends of flares of

get out of situations like that. So that is why I wrote. When I was

invited I thought wonderful a group that will meet the physical needs

of this junction of my life. And when I get the control I need in my

selection and maintaining my sugars all Glory Goes to God for me.

But, I realize there are people who may have been just looking for

straight diabetic group without their Faith being challenged and if

its a group that supports both I say Great. I am a person who goes

by the bylines of the groups I join and its kind of like a submission

thing to leadership what they say should be on the list. ;-) Ida
