A type 2 diabetic diet does not provide enough carbs for a normal child to thrive and grow properly and the diet has NOTHING whatsoever to do with developing type 1 diabetes. A diabetic diet could be very helpful to an overweight child for preventing type two diabetes. But not one of normal or less than normal weight. Type one is caused by an autoimmune disease that destroys the pancreas's islet cells regardless of what the child eats. Our diabetic nurse and endo have told us not to restrict Donnie's carbs. He is to eat " normal kid friendly " meals and snacks. Then he gets 1 unit of novalog to cover every 30 grams of carbs he eats and 1 unit of novalog for each 40 grams at dinner since in the evening he goes low for some yet unknown reason. He may eat 30grams of carbs or 120 it all depends on how hungry he is. One meal he may eat very little and another he will eats tons. This is needed for him to grow. He is very well controlled with his combo of Novalog, Novalin R, and Lantus. For dinner tonight he had a regular jack cheese quesadilla and salsa, chicken nuggets, a green salad, a bowl of canned peaches, and a piece of his friends b-day cake that hadn't been planned into his afternoon snack that he had to forgo until dinner. He then got 2.5 units of novalog 1.5 units of R to cover his evening snack and 2&1/4 hours after dinner just before snack he was 96. Then he gets a 45 gram snack (usually a granola bar, fruit, and cheese) and 4 untis of Lantus and goes to bed. VERY VERY different from Type 2. hugs Keri
