Cathy,

Do any of your local high or junior high schools have heated pools with

classes offered. One of our junior high schools has a heated pool and they

offer water exercise classes for pretty cheap...they only do this in the

summer when there is no school but maybe they have something like this in

your area??? I would actually think about taking some classes but I don't

have the time or a babysitter :(

They say swimming is good for those with Fibro or taking a swimming

exercise class. Have you tried it? I think I will make an effort to

go to the health club and go to the pool.

I did water aerobics - low impact for about 8 months. I did enjoy being

in the water and the work out didn't hurt my muscles, but I did feel

pain the next day. I did have to discontinue the class because when the

weather turned cold, I had a difficult time going from the warm pool to

outside and cold temps. It felt even worse! I would like to go back,

but just haven't had the money. The park district isn't too expensive,

but the Y had warmer water, but their classes are very expensive. Just

wish it didn't have to cost so much to try to find ways to feel better!

Unfortunately, they don't have pools (my kids went to these schools when

they were in Jr high and high school). The park district has a wide

variety of classes, but money is usually the issue.

Its a good thing I live in an apartment where I don't pay directly for

water, as I usually take long hot showers when i get up in the AM. That

helps me get through the day.

Hi Cathy

My doctors have suggested I do water exercise also and I cannot afford to go

to any pool. My doctor even tried to get the insurance to pay for it by

claiming it was physical therapy but my insurance said no. I just wish there

was somewhere I could go that wouldn't cost.

You are one of the lucky ones! Maybe I should just stick to plain

walking. :) Char

I walk and I also use a 'Theraband'. I got it when I went to physical

therapy. It's not too bad. It does wear me out though. I like walking much

better!

Hello Allicia,

EXCERCISE is critical!! But it cannot be done without giving your body what it

needs! A diet change is first and foremost! When I started excercising 7 months

ago, I had absolutely 0 muscle mass. I had been almost completely bedridden for

4 years!! Now there is no where on my body that is not all muscle!! If I miss

my excercise, I can feel it! It makes a huge difference in daily energy if I do

not do my excercises!

I found it kinda

interesting and kinda bumming to me....I can barely stay awake between

breakfast and noon let alone get up go to the local " Y " and do an hour long

class of exercising and lord knows that if I did do that I would come home

and pass out til 8:30 that night from being overly exhausted....

Any the rest of ya'll feel me?

But a new study in the July 27 issue of the British Medical Journal found

that regular aerobic exercise can produce substantial improvements in how

fibromyalgia patients feel.

Although previous studies have also found benefits from exercise for

fibromyalgia patients, researchers say those findings are hard to apply to

general practice because the exercise sessions were conducted in hospitals

under the supervision of trained health professionals. Those studies also

lacked long-term follow up.

But in this study, the authors compared the effects of a simple-to-follow, co

mmunity-based exercise program on a group of 132 people with fibromyalgia who

were attending a rheumatology clinic in London.

The patients were randomly divided into two groups that met in hour-long

classes twice a week for 12 weeks. One group received exercise therapy from a

personal trainer with no special training in working with fibromyalgia

patients. And the other group received relaxation and muscle flexibility

training.

After three months of following a individualized exercise program, which

consisted primarily of walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bicycle,

researchers found 35% of the patients said they felt much or very much

better. In comparison, only about half as many patients in the relaxation

group reported similar improvements.

And those beneficial effects were long lasting. One year later, fewer

patients in the fibromyalgia exercise group still met the clinical criteria

for having the condition (31 in the exercise group compared with 44 in the in

the relaxation group). People in the exercise group also had bigger

reductions in muscle and joint tenderness and said fibromyalgia was having

less of a negative impact on their daily life.

Study author Selwyn C. M. s of Poole Hospital in Dorset, England, and

colleagues say their findings show that " prescribed aerobic activity is a

simple, cheap, and potentially widely available treatment for fibromyalgia. "

I am *so* tired of this " exercise will fix everything line " ! I had a

job that involved a great deal of walking and I lost the ability to walk

long distances while I was already doing it! It just kept getting worse

and worse, so I had to cut back the amount of time I spent walking. Now

if that didn't save me back then, what makes them think it will do it

now?

Glad to see you back Allicia.

Dear Darcy,

I am absolutely 100% convinced of the power of excercise, as excercising daily

has changed my life!! It is not a line at all. The problem comes when a person

thinks the excercise alone will make the changes. They will not. A person must

have a complete lifestyle change!! PERIOD. It takes a change in diet (and

sticking to it), excercise daily, lots and lots of water, fresh air and sunshine

and rest. That is what I had to do and I have been symptom free for over 5

months. I was completely bedridden before the changes. And I had only a few

months to live when I started the changes. Clearly the changes work, because I

am alive and well today!!!
