Guest guest
Hi , I see what you mean by your life really changing when your grandson became so ill. You are to be admired for caring for your grandchildren. I heard the percentage of grandparents caring for grandchildren is growing. How sad. Where do you live? It sounds like the medical care there is quite poor. One thing to look into is the nearest university. They usually have a teaching hospital affiliated with it and are up on the latest procedures. When I lived in the SF Bay I area I went to Stanford University when I had a breast cancer scare. I wish I had more imformation for you. Giving a balanced diet and testing after eating is the only other thing I can think of. Vicki From: laura reynolds Hi my name is and Iam new to this way of life. In the last 21/2 years my life has been filp turned and everytime I think we are starting to recover something new pops up. This is going to be long please be patient and Iam sorry about my spelling and grammer in advance. Iam raiseing with the help of my husband and very little from thier mother 2 of my grandchildren. na is 11 and she is advanced and is 7 he is also advanced. My nightmere began 21/2 years ago when I heard odd sounds coming from his bedroom. who has never had any major problems other the being a typical boy was having a grand mal seizure. I was terrified and screamed for my husband thank God he is calm. He stayed with william while I got an ambulance. They didnt think he was going to make it to the hospital he has stopped breathing. We got thier and the hospital said he is probabily just one of those seizure kids. At the same time the ambulance driver was trying to tell them he had a bloodsugar of 45 when they got to the hous they gave him a low dose of sugar water and it shot up to 475 in 15 min. They stopped the sugar water. The er didnt even take note. Late the next day they did an eeg and said epileptic and put him on Valporic acid this is a mean nasty medicine it turned him into an basket case with 5 or more nose bleeds a day. I made them take him off as he couldnt function. 3 months later he was acting odd again he was eating alot peeing a lot, crabby, sweaty, tired just not connected. That night anothere seizure this time they took his blood sugar and it was 39 took it 5 min later it was 115 and was coming around took it again at 1 hour it was 180. Hospital still said give him sugar water iv. They did it went to 500 They said just a seizure kid. They watched him watch tv and realeased him after 5 hour his blood sugar was 300. I mentioned some type of sugar problems his nero said kids dont get diabetis. They put him on lamectal. 4 months later same problem. This time when he started shaking I caught it at the beginning as he was showing all the signs I told the dr because I gave him about 4oz orange juice and it stopped. One day he was at school his teachers father was there he is diabetic he asked me if william is hypo and I said no as I new nothing about it. He said you better watch him he is getiing ready to seize he is showing all the signs. Sure enough I was summoned to the school the next day william was on the floor in a full grand mal and had been for 20 min. We gave him diastat to stop it but it didnt work. He got the sugar Iv and it stopped. The nero said it was just being a seizure kid they out him in the hospital for 3 days I asked them to moniter his bloodsugar and they said it wasnt necessary as he is a seizure kid. So he was still showing those odd signs his teachers father came up and said snce I was there evertime william starts to shake hit the button to track the seizure and give him a drink of juice or a piece of fruit. I did and each time it stopped immeditally. At the end of 3 days they said he was jjust imagining the seizures for attention. THey gave him amirtiptyline to add to the lamectal and said it was pain med for the headaches. After 5 days I took him off he was a babbling mess pooping himself. I found a new nero and she had an a1c I think its called and it was 5.9 she said she wasnt to worried but wanted to have an endo look at him. The endo did and said he is probabily hypoglacimic with rebounding sugars and athat the lows were making his highs look normal. Then he started shaking again they took his booldsugar 1 hour before that and it was 101 now it was 49. He gavehim an odd look and said seems he has rebounding sugars and that he will probabily be diabetic soon. They gave him a drink and it stopped. They told me to watch his diet and In Aug that they will be doing a 5 hour test as he didnt like the results of the 3 hour test. He told william when he starts getting a headache to let me know so we can take his bloodsugar or if I see him peeing a lot. He gets geadaches at 85 he gets cranky at 70 he is peeing at 65He starts shaking at 60 it drops suddenlt below 50 and if we give him juice it starts back up and if we add peanut butter crackers it only goes to 125 and holds. He also said no diabetic should ever be given amitriptyline. When he is at school we have tracke that he will eat lunch and play for recess for half an hour and come in and 1 hour later his bloodsugar is 70.give juice and crackers and he is fine.He hasnt had a seizure since last Oct. I did let him splurge and let him have a small hot fudge sundae that he only ate half of and 2 hours later his blood sugar was 290. I thought I was wrong so we re washed our hands and used a wipe like they do in the hospital waite tomake sure it was dry and it was 289. Has anyone else had this happen what should I do. I limit sugar with the eception of that sundae I try to make sure he gets what he needs nutrition wise but should I make sure he gets no sugar or some. When it gets high is there a way to bring it down? When should I get worried and call the doctor and should it be the ped,or nero? He did have an MRI and a Cat scan and they showed no reason for a seizure disrder and they dont rn in the family. Byt he has diabetis on bith sides of his family. Any advice is appriciated. He is a bright happy boy in a 2/3 grade spilt level class next year for advanced kids.
Guest guest
Hi, , and welcome to this group, I am sorry that you had to join us because of the baby... it is hard enough on a adult, but on a child is even worse, get your hands on all the information that you can for diabetes, there are thousands of sites here on the web, by all you have said, it sounds to me like he has diabetes...and you should be treating him as such... make sure that he gets that test, and then go from there with his treatment... you can find wonderful recipes online for treats for him, so that he doesn't feel left out.. Guest guest
hi laura. v. rough. my prayers are with you. this is a nice group. i'm glad you joined. talking to people, getting more information, that really helps. i think you did the right thing - taking control, consulting other doctors. you do have to be your own doctor in a way. it can be really hard to get a complete, accurate diagnosis. that happened to me. took me months to get diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic...four-five different doctors and experimental tests not yet approved by the FDA. i ended up at UCSF, where i always do because i'm a metabolic mess...university hospitals can do and know things others don't...so i second vicki. although even so, my high-powered doctor at UCSF made a lot of assumptions based on one set of labs. i brought in years' worth of labs to show her such was not the case. so...keep copies of everything, take notes, look up all drugs prescribed for dangers, make 'em walk through everything - that is my motto. i did a search on hypoglycemia and seizures and found this website: http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/sym/seizures.htm it's a lot of information, but worth it. i'd take the list of possible causes in to the doctors and ask what they'd rule out and why. double check, see if it really makes sense. well, ok. don't know if that helps at all. but i'm glad you joined. rach p.s. re. sugar - i'd maybe watch all carbs, not just sugar. *liquid sugar* - like in soda, juice, milkshakes - those are the fastest acting and hard to bring down, i learned in a class, because of the way they spike blood glucose. they are good for lows, though. > Hi my name is and Iam new to this way of life.
