To Kathy and other newcomers:

YES... the CJD patient can ALWAYS hear you. I would suggest that if

there are ANY discussions that you do NOT want the patient to hear... please

leave the room and talk in a more private spot. I would also recommend the

hospital staff or hospice workers understand this also.

I speak from my past experience...any questions, please let me know.

Thanks...

Dolly

Can our loved ones hear us? I have been a nurse for many years. And I have

always been told that many patients while in a coma can hear you when you talk

to them. When I worked in the ICU's I would notice a change in Heart rate or

a

change in their blood pressure when someone was talking to them, especially if

it was a family member. I know CJD destroys parts of our brain, and therefore

we

don't know for sure if the hearing is affected. But I tell my mom to talk to

my

dad everyday. He isn't in a coma state yet, but I know that time will come,

and

I pray he hears every word we share with him, so he knows just how loved he

is.

And if they can't hear us...We hear us, and sometimes that's just as

important.

That's my 2 cents worth......kathy

I agree with Robin...I believe my father could hear until the very end. He

couldn't talk, walk, eat or drink, but I think he could hear what we were

talking about. We made sure that we left the room to talk about CJD. It

was a very difficult time for all of us but I think we did the right thing

by not talking about it around my dad. Just my opinion.
