Suzanne,

It is my belief that the victim has to have the agent in their body anyway,

the doctors told us that there is some outside catalyst to get it going. It

just seems that stress or trauma to the body may bring it on faster because

the immunity is down? Please don't think that you caused the cjd, it was

probably going to make an appearance at some time unfortunatly it was right

after you were in the hospital. Any stressful situation would have brought it

on. If that is what does it, remember we are only comparing situations. What a

burden to carry, I'm so sorry.

Here's my two cents on the stress issue:

The only stress my mother had prior to her illness was self-imposed. She

spent all summer worrying herself into a frenzy about my father's " heart

condition " (he doesn't have one). She also worried about having breast and

ovarian cancer. My mother comes from a long line of worriers. When her

symptoms became obvious, she was initially diagnosed with anxiety brought on

by stress which she blamed on my father not watching his health to her

satisfaction. Beyond that, she didn't work at all or have any outside

stressors. She also had a sour taste in her mouth as far back as a year

before she died. Neither doctors nor dentists could find anything wrong.

Suzanne, it is definitely not your fault that your mother got sick. We'll

probably never know for sure why this horrible thing happened to our mothers.

Don't feel responsible; it's not your fault that you got sick.

Robin,

I realize the agent was already there and I know it was just a matter

of time before it showed up, but often wonder if my mom be here now had I

not got sick. Maybe CJD would have progressed slower and we would have

mistaken it for Alzheimer's. Whatever the reason....it's not in my hands or

anyone's for that matter. God works in mysterious ways....we just need to

learn from it

Hi Suzie,

My name is Sherri Newman. My Mother died of CJD August 24, 1996. She,

like your Mother, was a very healthy 60 year old woman. CJD took her

life in 3 short months. I am in the process of writing her story for

submission to " The Many Faces of CJD " . My heart goes out to you. I

will add you to my list of people I pray for.

Thank you for sharing.

Hi all-

Have to jump in here! was transferred to Miami for a new job in

October of 1997. Just before that, she was unhappy with her job here and her

financial situation as she filed for bankruptcy. She had lived in Colorado

her entire life, minus 3 years in Iowa where she was born and a 3 year stint

in the Army, and when she moved, she was apart from the rest of our family

(which is very close)! I think as she got more homesick and upset with that

is when her symptoms began to really show up.

Sounds like more than coincidence to me...maybe there is an outside trigger

too...I guess that's why we all need each other -- to figure this out!

Suzanne,

You mustn't feel guilty - you weren't responsible for your asthma attack and

surely didn't want to get sick. And I know your mother would have wanted to

care for you, no matter what. As a mother, I know that nothing could keep me

from caring for my sick child, grown up or not. And knowing that it might not

be good for my own health wouldn't stop me either. So you really didn't have

control over that situation at all, and I know your mother wouldn't want you

to have those guilt feelings. And she's probably happy now that the last

thing she did on this earth was to help her daughter heal.

Hoping you feel better,

Yvette

Hi Everyone;

I know of NO unusual stress prior to my husbands dianosis with CJD. He

was alawys very calm and very few times during our 18 years of marriage

did I see him STRESSED.

Hope that helps.

Actually iif we are alive in this world there will always be a certain

amount of stress we will have.

If stress were a factor in CJD, don't you think there would be a lot

more cases?

The more that I am hearing and reading about HEPARIN the more I feel

like there should be a closer look into this. Maybe it didn't cause it,

but could it have triggered it?

I had round with the VA Hospital today. I, now have to write a lettre

to the hospital adminstrator to see if I cannot claim my husbands

records? Why do they want to keep them? After all he does not need

them any longer. Why should they be stored in the ARCHIVES. What good

will they do there?

Pray for me that I will not get " stressed out " and stay cool and calm as

I write this man.

Thanks again for being there.

Love you,

Betty

Dear Suzanne,

Please free yourself of that guilt you carry that you are the cause of your

Mom's CJD. If anything is stressful in a persons life that is living with CJD it

is knowing all that is happening to you and feeling helpless. It is being tested

for things that you know are happening to you and then beginning told tests are

negative. The disease it's self brings on stress, I am sure your mother would

have traded places with you while you lied in the hospital near fatal condition.

Her joy of your recovery the miracle of your life and the love she has for you

and the faith she probably leaned on all but strengthen her. CJD killed your mom

no part of you did. Her being infected by the killer disease is a mystery like

so many of us that have lost our loved ones. I will especially hold you in my

prayers. Your Mom would never want you to live with the guilt or burden that you

caused her illness. God Bless you and keep talking about the guilt you are

carrying. JILL

Stress and CJD

Dolly, Liz, etc...

Re: Stress and CJD.

My mother died from CJD on Dec. 10, 1998. Prior to the noticable

symptoms she displayed at the end of October she, in most part, appeared fine.

She did, over several months, mention leg pain, double vision, neck and shoulder

pain, constipation, a sour taste in her mouth and insomnia. She had leg pain

for several years, but thought it was arthritis. She was NEVER one to complain

so she kept this to herself and only mentioned it in passing. She always kept

active and hide her symptoms well.

I have always believed stress caused my mom's CJD to happen. On Oct.

13th, she came to my house. I had a near fatal asthma attack. She had to

call 911. In the ER I was paralyzed, intubated and put on a ventilator. I was

in this condition for 3 days before waking up. I spent 5 more days in Critical

Care. I returned home from the hospital on Oct. 21. She stayed with me to help

me recuperate. By the end of the month she was hiding belongings making notes

to where her things were, she was extremely confused, couldn't drive, turn on

the television or shuffle and play cards.....From that point on it was downhill

until her death.

I had a TERRIBLE time dealing with the fact that maybe the stress of my

illness caused my mother's CJD to become full blown. Doctor's at Massachusetts

General Hospital, Boston assured me my illness was NOT the cause of my mother's

CJD, but I NEVER believed them entirely.

Reading about stress and CJD it has brought back all those horrible,

guilt-ridden feelings again. This is not a good day for me....

Good Attitude Suzanne! We can't beat ourselves over this! Saying,

" We could have " - " We should have " - We all did everything that we could in

our power! God does work in mysterious ways & HE took the life of our loves

ones.

WE DIDN'T!! The only regret I have was not telling my mom things that I wish

I would have (ie.what a wonderful mom she was, tell her some personal stuff,

ask her some personal stuff etc.) We were very close (only 20 yrs. apart) but

unfortunately I wish

we could have shared MORE things together. She knew I loved her so much!

When she was sick I'd always hug/kiss her & told her how much I loved her.

Sometimes it registered & sometimes it didn't (is my guess)

At least I know she knew.

I can't wait for the day that I'll see her again. I'm definately not afraid

to die anymore.

What doesn't kill us makes us STRONGER.

Take Care,

Betty, good luck. I also had that problem with my mom's medical records.

I paid $ 50.00 to get a copy of her records. I knew damn well that they did

not send me ALL of her records. (for 2 reasons) 1. I went over her records

w/another doctor & he showed me a copy of my uncles death certificate along

w/some other letters regarding my uncle. This was my mom's brother who also

died of a " neurological "

problem that was never diagnosed. He was in the service (army). I never got

copies of any of this info. that I had previously glanced over quickly w/this

doctor.

2. There were 2-3 tests that my mother had (that I was present w/her) that I

also did not receive. I really wanted to see the results of those tests & was

not able too.

When I approached her doctor & told him of this, he said, " These are

confidential & we are not allowed to release everything " He said he gave me

only the records that

they were allowed to release. Isn't that terrible. Withholding information

that may be able to save our lives. It's like a puzzle & I wanted ALL the

pieces! Oh well, when I have the time, that's something else that I will

pursue.

Take care,

e

Dear All -

My Dad was born in Western Kansas and lived in Kansas and Colorado for his

entire life. He visited my family in Germany twice in the '80's for a

total of 9 weeks. He never seemed to be stressed and especially so in his

last couple of years when they moved out of Denver and into the country

with us. He and Mom were married for 52 years.

Kristi,

My father had no stress other than raising three teenagers,my brother was a

big source of stress. My father died at 43 and he was born in

Pittsburgh, grew up in Florida, served in the airforce in New Mexico, spent

years in Arizona and died a Texan in Houston after living here 9 years. At

the time preceding his death he was running seven miles a day,his first

symptom was he was losing his footing. He was largely of German heritage.

Thanks..

Kathy, great note. We should all try to understand the meaning of what you

said and apply it to our lives. My wife Helen had cancer in 1993. Her positive

attitude and prayer helped get her thru the cancer and the treatments. In July

of last year she was given a clean bill of health, only to succumb to the

prion invasion which started in August. The positive outlook of course did not

help with CJD. Keep up with the good emails. Bill

Hi, everyone. Dolly placed me back on the onelist.First of all, thank you all

so much for your support during our (Helen's and myself) bout with CJD. For

those of you that are not aware, my wife Helen passed away on Feb 6 after

being diagnosed with CJD on Dec 8. We, like many of you had extensive tests

which started in Aug of 98 and continued till Dec.8,all of which were negative

up till that date.

The subject of stress is up for discussion. Without a doubt, ( but I can't

prove it) Helen's CJD was activated by stress. Over the past several years

there had been stress associated with family, work (owned her own travel

agency) health and people that we knew. She was continually stressed out.

Sleep for her was 3 or 4 hours a night. To bed at 11 up at 4. This went on for

months prior to her getting sick. She worried about everything and if she

didn't have a major worry, she would pull something up. I thing that s

situation that we had with a neighbor, a boundary line problem, may have been

the trigger. That situation upset me, and when she how it had affected me, she

went into a state of depression. It seemed as I look back, it may have helped

pull the trigger.

I believe that everyone who has had CJD or is dealing with it now has

some form of stress in their life. Now did the stress cause CJD. We

could ask the same of every other disease. I do not think stress causes

the disease. However the addition of streaa may increase the sumptoms of

the disease process. It is like attitude. Many studies have been done in

cancer patients. (which thankfully some of them are curable) These

studies show if a person has a postiive attitude and believes the cancer

treatment goes better. The percentage of people cured are greater. Which

leads me to believe stress can aggrevate the symptoms of CJD, not

necessarily bring them on. We each live our lives the best we can. Until

they (CDC and Gov.) decide this horrid disease is worth their time, we

must all come together to push for that. But let's not beat ourselves up

over things we can not change. I am sure each of you loved your spouse,

parent, brother, sister or child, and would have given your life to save

them. I know I would for my dad suffering today. But I can not. So I'll

just show him as much love as I can and cherish the time I have left

with him. It is sad, we can't change the past, but we can change the

future. Slow down, look at life, love your friends and family. Life is

too short. Sorry for the length, I just want each of you to look

forward. Don't forget the past but live to the future. life is too

short. I lost a dear friend at the age of 37 yesterday. He had a massive

stroke. He left behind 2 children 6 months and 3 yrs and his wife. He

cherished his family and took time with them. I will miss him dearly,

but I learned a valuable lesson.

Right on target, Terry. Thanks again! I think what we're considering here is

not that stress CAUSES CJD, but that it might allow the prion replication

process to ACCELERATE. In other words, the CJD was already there due to

infection by one of the many means we have discussed, but stress was kind of

" the final straw " .

I have been following this issue, and have not comented, but my Mom was under an

enormous amount of stress, do to various reasons, when the devil crept up.......

Saw this article in the Houston Chronicle Today, thought it would fit into this

discussion:

This Weekend Health...

STRESS CAN AT TIMES BE THE CAUSE OF ILLNESS

Mental Notes, Dr. Baker

Question: You keep writing about how depression is a medical problem caused by

genes. But I think my depression came on after I was in a stressful job. I went

on medication, but I

think my problem got better from changing jobs, not from the taking pills. Don't

you think some problems can be due to stress???

Answer: Yes, stress brings on significant changes in the levels of certain

stress hormones. The hormones enter the blood stream and impact many organs in

the body, including the

brain. Once in the brain, stress hormones act like a light switch to turn on the

genes that cause clinical depression. The same stress hormones can trigger other

medical diseases,

too, including heart disease, breathing problems and some neurological diseases.

By the way, you are correct that jobs can be stressful. A recent laboratory

study of " rat society "

shows subordinate rats have a lot more stress than their boss rats. The rat race

is indeed stressful!!!

Thanks for the article, Terry. With all that's happened in the last two

years with Dad and his passing, with big problems at work and family stress

( the good kind!), I find that I have been not doing well. I have had

headaches, migraines and illness this winter. My family has been

encouraging me to change jobs or quit. I think you are all right! Maybe

it's time to look out for me. Someone else will just have to step in for

me.

Thank you for the nudge. Shar

Kathy, very well said!! How do you get on with your life?

It's been 3 months since my mom past away & we still can't get on with our

lives.

My mom kept our family together & now it's torn apart. We're not as close as

we use to be. I'd rather be dead then alive. Being the oldest of 4 children

it's now my responsibility to hold down the fort. (cook meals, do bills,

drive family members places etc.) I don't mind doing this but I keep telling

myself that my mom needs to do these things!! She needs to be here to take

care of my dad & her other children.

I hate my life without her. It's empty. It's lonely. It's meaningless.
