My paternal grandmother had diabetes type 1.

My father developed diabetes type 2 around the age of fifty? he lived to the age

of 79.

I developed diabetes around the age of fifty.

All three of us were short and overweight.

My ancestry is half Finnish. My father and grandmother were 100% Finnish.

it's v. interesting. i'm chinese and german, with a little scotts

thrown in. can trace back five generations and i'm the first person

to be diabetic - either type 1 or 2. although, there are other

autoimmune endocrine things that run on both sides of my family.

*they* say diabetes is genetic. that is, there is a genetic

mechanism involved - but it isn't a deterministic kind of genetic

thing. well, genetics aren't as deterministic as the media would

have it in the first place. (read an interesting article about that

recently, the portrayal of genetics and the drive for research

funding.)

learned something else. something like 90% of type 2's have a family

history and less than 20% of type 1's have a family history of

diabetes.

Hi Rygel, My dh has a tonof it in his family, uncles, grandparents, siblings,

yet he has none. Praise God. I have one grandmother who had it, then me ;-)

I just think I have Don's because God saw his plate was full. No need to

pile anymore on him. I think there are several " markers " such as overweight,

sedentary lifestyle, family history. I think it is all different for each of

us. We could all tell a different story. It is easier to be a diabetic now

than 30 years ago! I know that for sure. many higs, marilyn

Very interesting. Maybe someone knows a little more than I could give a

little thought on it.;-) Hugs, Marilyn
