Guest guest
Cindy, huge congrats on being smoke-free. Way to go! Fiona Young-Brown Kentish Maid Candles www.kentishmaidcandles.com -----Original Message----- Good morning, everyone!!! Well...I have been smoke-free for 6 days, 3 hrs, 47 minutes, 28 seconds. You guys have been my inspiration!!!! This is such an awesome place for advice and support!! Because of not smoking, I have to drink LOTS and LOTS of water. I think that is also helping my weight loss, but I have not weighed in for two weeks. (I'm not sure if I'm going to continue going to meetings or if I am going to try to do it at home.) I also have not been keeping up with my journal---but I am watching what I eat. I go to my doctor next week. I can't wait to tell her I am a non-smoker!! <HUGE SMILE> I will let you know what my weigh in is....I still have 40 lbs to loose! Guest guest
Sharon, That was an AWESOME letter!!! You don't know how much it touched me. (By the way---it was worth more than 2 cents! LOL). I watched my mother die (at the age of 64) a brutual, short death from cancer (small cell). It was a sight I never want my children to see me. It has been six months since her death, and I have finally run out of excuses. I was always saying...well, I am still under stress...I am still depressed...it's the only comfort I have....yada yada yada. Finally...because of THIS group, I found the strength, courage and support!!! OK..I am going BACK to my Monday WW meetings. Enough procrastination! Guest guest
Congrats!. Not counting, are you? ;-) By the way, just some encouragement (from personal experience). At around the 1 week mark of quitting, I'd feel strong, and I'd know I was over the physical addiction. The first handful of times I quit (evidently I failed at it a few times before I got it right ;-) I'd always trick myself into letting myself smoke at about the week mark. Because I was "no longer addicted". PLEASE please please: DO NOT BELIEVE YOURSELF if you tell yourself that. You will be a liar (no offense, it's not you, it's the addiction talking). Good luck, and get through it! I know you can do it!! Oh, and congrats on the eating well. When will you start journaling again? *cheers* Elissa To my WONDERFUL WW Friends!! Good morning, everyone!!! Guest guest
Cindy, Congratulations on still being smoke-free! I really commend you for trying to quit smoking and lose weight at the same time. I really want to quit smoking also, but I know I could not tackle both the quitting and trying to lose weight at the same time, so am going for the weight loss first.....lose the weight first, then lose the cigs. Guest guest
If I could offer my two cents worth here (which may be worth only one cent after all), I think Cindy has the right idea. If you are going to do both, I think you are better off either quitting smoking first, or working on both together. In 1989 I lost 90 pounds, and kept it off for five years, within ten pounds this way or that. Then I quit smoking, and slowly but surely over a period of a few years I gained back every single little pound plus five extra! I couldn't believe it! I mean, seriously, you would think I would have been able to put a stop to it somewhere, but it just crept back on, one cookie at a time, one bite of ice cream at a time, one Carl's Jr Superstar at a time. This time I have been smoke-free for so many years I can't count (eight, I think), for so long I can't even imagine smoking. My metabolism and lifestyle are adjusted to being smoke-free, and that's the way I am losing the weight and that's the way I am going to keep it off. It was faster and easier to lose weight as a smoker (I'd lost all 90 pounds in less time than it has taken me to lose 57 this time), but this time I will keep it off. Also, smoking is a far worse health hazard than being overweight. Take it from me, as I watched my father die from lung cancer and emphysema, and am now watching my mother gasp for breath every time she leaves her seat, from advanced emphysema. When I started gaining weight after I'd quit smoking, I knew that as much as I hated it, I'd rather be fat and able to breathe. Guest guest
You're welcome, Cindy ... it is so difficult to watch someone you love suffer and not be able to do anything about it. I can't personally think of anything much worse than gasping for breath. No amount of morphine in the world can make that any better. Meanwhile, keep going, girl! Don't want to put too much of a burden on your shoulders, but you are in a position of being able to show others what CAN be done (no matter how long and how much hard work it may be). If you have a harder time losing after you quit, remember IT IS WORTH IT! BTW, did you use the patch or anything to help you quit? Sharon ----Original Message Follows---- From: cndarella@... Guest guest
Cindy in NC I'm so excited for you, it brings back memories of when I first quit (all six months ago), everytime I said I was a non-smoker i grinned from ear to ear and felt invincible. I was wondering how you were doing and was going to post this morning to ask. Please, please stay with your weekly meetings as they are more important than ever. The second to last time i gave up cigarettes i was going to weight watchers but decided to just focus on quitting and because of it i put up the weight i'd lost on the program and went back on the cigarettes because i was upset about the weight gain and thought going back on them would help me loose again (DID NOT WORK, DO NOT TRY). You're taste buds (sense of smell will increase as well) are waking up after being suppressed by smoking and everything will taste so much nicer so you will need a way to be accountable for what you are putting in your mouth and it will help you with portion control. Keep up the excellent work and give us an update once in a while to let me know how you are doing. Feel free to email me any time you need to talk. You will be successful, remember you don't ever want to be that person again.
