Guest guest
DAY 1 At 7am I had a cup of tea and a couple slices of toast. Then I phoned the hospital to check that they had a bed available- unfortuately you have to do this on the NHS in UK - I was in luck they had a bed for me- Thank God as I really couldn't have waited a day longer- the waiting for this day had been agonising!! I arrived at hospital about 9am- my friend Caroline gave me a lift and stayed for a while. I was feeling extremely nervous and unfortuately my myo was not til late afternoon so I had to sit in the chair beside my bed reading a magazine, but I couldn't concentrate at all. I was visited by the aneathetist who went over the procedure with me, but he was a bit puzzled as to why on my consent form it said Laporotomy and Myomectomy- he said he would double check with Mr Wynn the consultant. Next a Registrar arrived and went through in great detail the ins and outs of the procedure and assured me that laporotomy was the term for the incision in the abdomen- she told me to confirm this with Mr Wynn before the op. At 3pm, a nurse came over and said " Can you change into your gown now " I thought to myself " OH my God- this is it " About 5 minutes later the porters arrived with a trolley and I was wheeled miles across the hospital campus until we arrived at the operating theatre - it felt so weird to be wheeled all that way when I was perfectly capable of walking! We arrived in the pre-op waiting room and I asked a nurse if I could speak to Mr Wynn- the consultant. The man himself appeared a couple of minutes later so I asked him about the term laporotomy and he reconfirmed that this meant the opening up of the abdomen ie/ the incision. Soon after his lordships visit I was taken into the anaesthetic room where 2 anaethetists took my mind off what lay ahead by asking me about my job- then I was priveledged by another visit by Mr Wynn who said " We'll have you hopping and skipping in no time!! " I was given pre-med and then knew nothing until I woke up in the pre/post-op room and remember saying to the nurse " Why do I hurt so much? " " You've just had an operation love " she said " OH, is it all over " I replied in disbelief. To be continued...........
