meds for ADD?

Hi,

I am beginning the chelation process for my son shortly. He is almost 8 and

having a very hard time in school. Based on his hair analysis, it is no

wonder why! Considering the chelation will take at least a year to

complete, the question of medication in the meantime comes up for me. We

have tried DMAE for his attention problems. It has helped a little bit. He

is struggling considerably on a daily basis, and his self esteem is

dwindling. He is very bright, and Asperger's, or ADD is a more accurate DX

for him than Autism. His DX at school is only language disability. He is

falling through the cracks since his behavior is so good, the teacher fails

to notice he hasn't produced the required work, especially anything that

requires handwriting. He only gets speech therapy at the moment. The

teacher thinks he would benefit from meds. I asked her, she is not pushing

us to do it. We held him back a year to help him, and that has been good. He

would really be failing otherwise. Is anyone using adderall or anything for

attention while chelating? Andy mentions in his book, to use things as you

need to keep you going, through the chelation process (example, celebrex for

fibromyalgia). Would using something for ADD qualify? I understand the cause

of all his problems is heavy metal poisoning, so this would be used as a

temporary band aide solution.

Any advice?

Thanks,

nne

I'd steer clear of medicating. First of all, you don't always get what you wish

for with these meds. You often have to try numerous meds, and it can cause

further distraction for the child while he deals with new emotions, and bodily

adjustments. My son tried Adderall, Concerta, Ritalin, Strattera, Celexa,

Clondine, and Seroquel hoping to find something, anything.....all caused major

problems that were worse than what we were trying to fix.

I have had much success with B6/Magnesium therapy with my son. It has totall

corrected attention and distraction issues, as well as behavior. It doesn't

work for all (about 50%), but it is worth exploring. You can read more at the

Autism Research Institute website.

Also, explore dietary issues.

Our family's experience with trying drugs for ADHD was horrible. We

tried ritalin, adderall, concerta, serzone, lithium & seroquel.

Actually the ritalin was the start of the need for all the rest.

She is doing very well with supplements.

Hi, nne,

My son is also 8, Dx'd with ADHD and Asperger's. Over the past three

years we've tried lots of dietary/behavioral/supplement approaches;

over the past two years we've tried many meds (Ritalin, Concerta,

Straterra, Zoloft, etc).

Currently, my son is on a GF/CF diet with lots of supps and dietary

enzymes but he is also on Adderral XR and Tenex (a depressant).

Stimulant meds(like Adderral, etc) are tough for my son -- he gets

anxious, tics -- but he was having so much trouble at school both

with attention and impulse control that we felt we had to do

something. The Tenex helps to reduce the side effects of the

stimulant. It's not anything you'd be happy to do but it helps him

at school and we're about to do his second weekend of chelation so,

hopefully, he'll progress soon to the point where the meds aren't

nec'y.

On the bright(er) side, at least these meds are supposedly out of his

system within 24 hrs, and his behavior seems to confirm that.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do,

Janet
