I am hoping that somenoe else may have gone through the same

confusion and may have some advice or knowledge. I am 35 years old

and have a 4.5 cm fibroid that is causing all sorts of trouble. I do

not have any children, but want to preserve my fertility. I am

trying to decide between UFE and and abdominal myo and am totally

confusing myself. I guess I just need some thoughts on how other

women made their decisions. Thanks, Jen

Jen, Hi, I'm also. I had a 10cm fibroid and also a 2 cm

fibroid. I am 43 and just had a UFE 5 weeks ago. I feel great and

am so happy that I've gotten through all this. I was so freaked

out. Same as you, wanted to preserve everything. The reason why I

didn't do myo was a fear that it'll grow right back!! I didn't want

to go through major abdominal surgury, only to have it grow back in

a couple of years!!!! Being more risky type of surgery, I was weiry

of having to go through this and maybe again. It was tough becuase

at 1st, you read all these scary things about UFE but after

researching for months I decided it was my only choice. I've had my

kids already so that wasn't my issue. I was freaked out about all

the risks, but they are so little compared to the risks of myo,

hysterectomy. I found great support from the embo group and

basically these women helped me with all my fears. At least with

UFE, it won't grow back, although there is a chance that it could

find a new blood supply, but again, small risk. You have to

research and weight all this. It's not easy, but soon over time I

came to realize that this was my only choice. I am doing great, my

procedure went just fine, no complications, and I've had a period on

time. So far, so good. Jen

Jenn,

I'm having my ab myomectomy this coming Thursday. I actually did

research a while back and decided that I wanted the UFE. I searched

out a big time doctor in Philadelphia and made my appt. One of his

first questions to me were is the fibroid causing me problems and in

my case no. My reason I told him for getting it out was because it

gave me tons of trouble during pregnancy and caused my daughter to be

born at 24wks. He then told me that UFE wasn't the route for me. He

said it's still to new and they have mixed results on performing this

procedure on women who still want to have children. He said studies

are showing that sometimes after having UFE that it can cause a

greater risk in miscarriage or preterm delivery. Both of which I hope

to avoid. He said if my child bearing days were over he would do it

no problem.

So back to my doctor I go who tells me the same thing. My doctor

also said the reason he is taking my fibroid out through an incision

in the abdomen is because my fibroid is somewhat in the lining of my

uterus and by doing it this way he can stitch my uterus back up

properly to hopefully with stand a full term pregnancy.

Get a few different opinions thats what I did and after hearing all

of them abdomen surgery is my best option to still have another child.

Good Luck,

Pam

Good luck with your operation pjkay720!

______

Fibroid Facts:

Just because something is published in book form doesn't necc.

mean that it's true, but we are swayed by the authority of a book

format.

Some of the fibroid books have a very slight difference in tone, or

quite marked difference of opinion on certain topics. It's very hard

to know which is the closest to the truth and when two seemingly

contradictory viewpoints could both be true.

Looking at PubMed certain research findings also seemed

contradictory and I wondered how big the sample groups were.

The subject of brith control and fibroids is very, very confusing, for

example.

How ARE we supposed to kow what is or isn't right, aside from

the dates of publication? Could gut feeling and common sense

are as good a guideline as any?? Or does that tempt us to go

with the least scary, most appeaing choices, right ly or wrongly?

Hi Jen

You have the horrible task of trying to establish the truth about UAE

(Hmmm....sounds like a catchy name for a book...). Some sources

suggest that it may potentially effect fertlity and others argue

otherwise. Try the following if you haven't already:

The Yahoo embo forum

Smartgroups UK group (One of the posters performs UAE in the UK)

Carla Dionne's book

Dr. Indman website on search of that name

PubMed on aweb search of that title

Best wishes

Hi Jen,

I was very interested in UFE as well. I am also 35 and have only

one child so far. My main reason for removing my fibroid was to

preserve my fertility. My fibroid was asymptomatic other than

attaching to & obstructing my bowel when I was 8 months pregnant. I

discussed UFE with my Dr. and she said that it has not yet been

proven safe in women who wish to preserve their fertility. To me, I

didn't want to be a guinnea pig in this area - my future fertility

is way too precious to me. So, 3 weeks ago I had an abdominal myo

and I can honestly say it wasn't that bad and today I feel 99.9%

back to normal. I am now in the 4-6 month waiting period before

trying to get pregnant again.

It is a difficult choice but is one that every woman needs to make

for herself. Good luck to you!
