I too had 3 small fibroids that would cause horrible bleeding with lots of

clotting pretty similar to what you are experiencing. I too would wonder how I

could have so much bleeding. The clots were enormous sometimes. If you are

anemic, are you taking some iron tablets? This happened to me and I lost a

pint of blood in one day with all that clotting and bleeding.

I just had a UFE with the main symtom, hemmoraging, clots,

uncontrollable bleeding etc. My periods got heavier and heavier

over the last 2 years, and I was diagonosed with a fibroid 3 yrs

ago. Mine grew from 5 to 10 cm and when I had my 1st hemmoraging

episode, I was 10 cm. This could happen anytime during my period.

The 1st time, it was on day 3. The 2nd time, it happened like on 5

or 6, when I thougt I was safe, huge gushes of blood. It would go

right througha super delux tampon, 5 minutes!!! I'm running to the

bathroom to change again!!!! So awful. Yes, I became anemic too.

I've been on iron for 5 weeks, and my blood count is finally back

up. I'm no longer anemic or bleeding!!! Yeah!!! Anyway, as far as

your concerned, your fibroids are so small! I'm sure you can have

them removed in a less radical way. What happens after you pass

these clots? Does it slow down or are you like this your whole

period? I knew I had to do something when this Janurary, my

hemmoraging happened between periods!! I got my procedure moved

up. Look into all your obtions. Start researching what's out

there. For me, UFE was my only obtion. Then again, I found out

about it myself. He just said watch and wait. This may or may not

happen again. I got to the point that I had to do something and had

been researching all along. I'm so glad. Hasn't your gyno provided

any obtions for you? Jen

Heavy bleeding and clost are characteristic of fibroids inside the

uterus (submucousal). This explanation of why this happens is from

Dr. West's website: " Fibroids can cause extremely heavy periods,

which can continue for seven to fifteen days. As you know, every

month the lining of the uterus thickens in preparation for

pregnancy. When pregnancy does not occur, this tissue, - the

endometrium, is shed during menstruation. When the endometrium

breaks away form the inner wall of the uterus, a network of

corkscrew-shape arteries called the spiral arteries open and begin

to bleed. (The illustration to the right shows a cross-section of

uterus with the cavity filled with endometrium and the spiral

arteries leading to the endometrium. The illustration shows some of

the endometrium breaking away from the wall and the spiral arteries

open and bleeding.)

The bleeding is normal. It is designed to flush the tissue out of

the uterus. Theseparation of the endometrium from the uterine wall

releases a powerful hormone called prostaglandin, which causes the

smooth muscle of the uterus to contract and squeeze the lining and

blood out from the cavity and through the vagina. The contraction

also squeezes shut the spiral arteries, stopping the bleeding. Under

normal circumstances, women stop bleeding after a few days and do

not hemorrhage of form clots.

If you look at the illustration to the left, which shows a submucous

fibroid bulging into the cavity of the uterus, you can see that the

uterine musculature cannot contract in the area surrounding the

fibroid because the normal tissue has been pushed aside. As a

result, the arteries in this area will remain open. When this

occurs, a women will hemorrhage, pass large clots, and have a period

that lasts up to fifteen days. She can become severely anemic and

often will feel weak, faint, and unable to go about her usual

activities. The longer this continues, the worse it becomes, because

as the tumor grows, more spiral arteries become involved and the

heavier she will bleed. " http://repmed.com/fibroids.html

Submucousal fibroids can be removed via hysteroscopic resection by a

well trained qualified doctor.

I am taking iron tablets and have been since the end of January. The

strange thing about the clotting is that as soon as they are passed

the bleeding all but stops! Another member suggested that my anaemia

may be a contributory factor?

How did you treat your anaemia and fibroids or are you still

sufferring with them?

Hi everybody,

I tried to go into the website repmed.com/fibroids.html. It does talk

about how the blood vessels open up and can't close with submucosal

fibroids. However, I can never actually see the picture they describe

that is to the left of the screen. I'm really interested in viewing

the picture. Does everyone else see the spiral arteries when they

open up this website? Any suggestions for being able to see the

picture? My computer is not out of date at all. Can't figure out why

I can't see the picture. Thanks!
