Guest guest
Bridgette York, the Director of the Fibroid Network Charity in the UK would like to share the following information: Black Women's Healthcare - No More 'One Size Fits All' 06 May 2004, 19.00 - 20.30. 'One size fits all' healthcare doesn't work for black women. But how can we create a culturally relevant, responsive and targeted NHS? How does the medical profession deal with black women and their specific healthcare needs? What are the challenges and barriers to communicating with this group? What, in turn, do black women need and want from the medical profession? Are the so-called experts listening: and who are the experts anyway? Isn't it time that healthcare professionals took notice of the knowledge and experience of these women themselves? The Dana Centre is holding a discussion evening led by black women, for black women, about black women, to examine the health issues that concern them. And we want key players in health to sit up and take notice of what our audience says. To do this we will submit participants' ideas and positive suggestions to the Department of Health's consultation exercise 'Choosing Health? A consultation on action to improve people's health'. And just in case that's not enough of an incentive for you, specially selected objects from the Science Museum's vast medical reserve collection - much of which has never been seen before - will be on show to provide further inspiration for debate. Black women face particular health concerns.
