Guest guest
I would call your doctor if it is causing you this much stress. You are not a pain - you and insurance company are paying a lot of money. Questions should be expected. > THANKS to those who wrote again !!! HOWEVER, my fear is NOT about surgery ... I guess none of you have ever had my problem. Continuous dry gagging, as if i am throwing up....(nothing comes up) after i wake up.... ONLY water stops it. This could be serious . The surgery feels like nothing compared to this. I will try going without before surgery to see if i can do it. But i am recovering from a cold, so i can't try it yet. It REALLY upset me this morning because i gagged til i drank water. I spoke to a nurse friend who told me sucking on ice chips is O.K pre-surgery. .. she said they tell you nothing at all, for fear that you will interpret 1 sip for 1 GLASS of water. I have 2 weeks to figure it out, and hopefully my cough will be better. i will consult with medical people. i don't want to call my doc. about it yet, because i don't want to be a pain. i will call his nurses about sucking on ice, and swishing water around in my mouth. i think they already said no to sucking on ice. If i carry a water bottle with me i won't panic as much. I wonder if they would allow a Xanax the night before, or if that would make me thirstier...!!! thanks again for all the help and advice. Guest guest
I told you my experience with water before surgery. I feel the same way as you at times and I always need my water. I got through it and I told you how I got through it. I cannot pick up the phone and call your doctor to ask questions for you, nor can I make this issue go way for you. you've received some good advice here. you've got to make the best of the days leading up to your surgery. I hope all goes well.
Guest guest
Dear , I have a similar problem with dry mouth though for different reasons so, yes, I can understand what you're going through. The meds I take for HBP and allergies cause dry mouth. This is not at all an uncommon side effect among Rx meds. It is my habit to carry a water bottle around with me at all times to prevent the dry coughing that can happen when I get too dehydrated. And you're right, the coughing won't stop until you're properly watered. I always tell my family that I have to be watered throughout the day or my throat will feel like it's closing off before the coughing starts. Even before bedtime, I make sure I'm watered well to get through the night. As I understand the few posts I've read here so far, this is an anxiety reaction for you. This may be redundant, but wouldn't resolving the problem of anxiety attacks would make a world of difference to you. But it might take more than two weeks and if there's a med involved in that process, it would probably cause dry mouth, too. Visualization and relaxation techniques help me when I'm feeling anxious though, admittedly, I have never had a serious anxiety attack. You need to call your doctor again and explain exactly what the problem is to the doctor, not the nurses. It sounds like you've had enough advice from nurses and all they can do it give you the standard advice anyway. As far as swishing water in the mouth is concerned, I know that wouldn't help me because the dryness is in the throat, too, and that is what triggers the coughing. I know I've been no help at all. I just wanted to respond to your comment that maybe no one here has had this kind of problem. Just thought you should know, yes I get it! If someone told me I had to go hours without liquids, I would fold! It's not realistic given the effect of my meds. Take care, Gloria > THANKS to those who wrote again !!! Guest guest
Hi You are so worried that I'd say do contact the GP, or whoever. Why spend your whole time worried sick about something they can advise you about in a moment? It's their job, and so make that call. Don't be a coward like me! Guest guest
, I believe there are gel-based mouth lubricants you can enquire about. The nurse perhaps can swab your mouth with this stuff and you won't have that dry feeling but if it's your throat you're worried about this won't have any effect. The problem I see, is the more anxious you become over this, the more your saliva will dry up so you have to relax which I know is pretty hard. The sedative the night before may put your mind at ease and help with salivary flow - ask for a dissolvable sub-lingual tablet so you don't require water - Ativan has a s/l version. Btw, try to breathe through your nose, especially when you're sleeping, mouth breathing will dry your mouth and throat out even further. Also, try something like Rhinaris gel for your nose, I use it and it helps keep my nose moisturized and cool-feeling and facilitates breathing through the nose. I love this stuff because I suffer from dry nasal passages and it really helps me breathe properly and it's inexpensive and harmless.
