A blood test?

This will vary from case to case according to the number,

location, size and type of fibroids that you have and any other

factors.

Odd and heavy periods are one of the possible fibroid

symptoms.

A fibroid on a stalk is called pedunculated.

There is a section on this site that lists posts mentioning U.S.

doctors and you might also try a keyword search, for example, for

your home state & town, or a doctor's name. You could see if

different types of local hospitals have websites with specialism

listings.

Get a couple of books, such as Carla Dionne's 'Sex, Lies and the

Truth about Uterine Fibroids' paperback (in the most recent

edition) or 'What your doctor may not tell you about fibroids' by

Goodwin, Meyer and Drum. Don't worry about the

attention-grabbing titles as these cover all the kinds of things

you'll want to know about symptoms, treatments and so forth.

They will still be a handy reference after any operation too.

Amazon has a lot of titles for fibroids.

There is a fibroid charity in the USA called NUFF. On an internet

search include the word 'fibroids' to avoid calling up a nudism

organisation site :-)

You never know what you might find in a local library too.

Women's general health books can be handy.

A healthy diet is good for helping the body cope and organic

food is ideal.

Have a look at 'The Fibroid Place' , Smartgroups UK and Yahoo

Healing Fibroids Naturally.

There are a lot of great websites out there. Sometimes

specialists have their own websites and some of these are very

informative. Some of the doctors names mentioned here may

have a site or online posting. Sometimes book reviews crop up

on a web surf. Try Dr. Indman and Dr. Toaff's sites.
