JOHANNESBURG : A 67-year-old South African Indian grandmother has been

fined for sending love and hate messages to her gynaecologist and

intimidating him.

Julega Karolia, a Muslim who covers herself from head to toe in a

traditional cloak, received a suspended jail sentence of five years

and a fine of 2,000 rands.

In a bizarre tale that would provide great fodder for Bollywood

scriptwriters, newspapers here reported the case of a well-known South

African Indian doctor Adam Latib, who testified that Karolia had been

harassing him and his family for almost two years, inundating them

with telephone calls and SMSs.

The doctor, who is 63, first saw Karolia as a patient in 1998. He

conducted a hysterectomy on her two years later. Two months after the

operation, Latib began receiving telephone calls from Karolia.
