At " Open Doors " last year, video clips of myomectomies were

shown and there didn't appear to be much blood loss with this

operation. Yet, this is one of the " myths " that doctors tell

patients to scare us away from myomectomy and push them us

hysterectomy (the surgery many doctors are more skilled and

comfortable with). My own gynecologist told me " oh yea I could

do a myomectomy, but it would be so bloody! " ..I found a new

doctor.

Wanda, I wish that really was a myth. But it's all too true that in the hands

of a less-than-skilled-and-experienced surgeon, a myomectomy can result in a

significant loss of blood, and in some cases so much blood is lost that the

surgery is converted to a hysterectomy. Remember, the doctors who spoke to us

at " Opening Doors " are among the top in their field. In their hands, a

myomectomy is a much safer operation than the same thing done by a

run-of-the-mill MD. You did right to find a new doctor.
