STILL VERY CONFUSED

I am posting this to both the embo and uterinefibroids website - with the

hope that I can get some resolution. AFter 2 weeks of meeting endless

doctors - my pcp, gyne, 2nd opinion gyne, IR - this is what was assessed:

MY pcp, first gyne and 2nd opinion gyne at least all agreed that the H word

is not necessary. Thank God for that. Now the big decision : should i get

a myo or UAE. Remember I only have bulk symptoms such as constipation, IBS,

bloating, and no heavy bleeding - my period is over in 3 days. My pcp and

2nd opinion gyne do not seem to be pro- UAE because the cases they have

handled post UAE procedure are mixed. My pcp told me that of the 3 cases

she;s heard - two women were regretful they got it done (both UAE procedures

were at Lenox Hill) - too much pain post, UAE.

My 2nd opinion gyne - though he did not specify he is anti UAE - he did

not sound positive about it claiming UAE is still fairly experimental and

there is not a huge study out there letting women know about the positive

effect of it on a woman's ovary ; the chances of me going to menopause is a

likelihood if the particles injected go to the ovary. He did suggest that I

see a gastroenterologist before I decide if i should choose UAE or myo . He

also prescribed Serafen ? a mild tranquilizer to help with pms, bloating,

etc.

The IR i saw last Fri at least agreed that before I get any procedure done,

to see this gastroenterologist first. When he checked my stomach, he claims

he could hear some movements inside . he did however, agree with my 2nd

opinion gyne that the chances of a woman going into menopause post UAE has a

2% chance of happening and a 1% chance of it turning into a hyst.

This is what I noticed after going thru a barrage of doctors: both the IR

and gyne do not seem to be very friendly with each other. My dilemna (and I

have expressed this to my IR) is that i want my gyne to communicate well

with my IR because if i need gynecological care post UAE of course i want my

gyne to be in sync with the IR. I don't feel the need to change either

one. I believe both of them are very good in their respective fields.

WHAT SHOULD I DO - FOR CERTAIN I KNOW I WILL WAIT TO SEE THE

GASTROENTOROLOGIST - WHICH I THINK WILL BE ANOTHER NIGHTMARE BECAUSE HE IS

ON VACATION AND THE NEXT AVAILABLE APPT IS NOT UNTIL APRIL 26. Can anyone

help? I am just really stressed. ONE OTHER CONCERN - WHEN I ASKED MY IR

HOW MANY UAE'S HE HAS PERFORMED - HE SAID 50 BUT HE HAS ASSISTED SEVERAL

PROCEDURES. ISN'T THAT A BIT TOO LOW OF A NUMBER ? WHAT IS THE ACCEPTABLE

NUMBER OF PROCEDURES AN IR HAS PERFORMED IN ORDER TO QUALIFY HIM AS A GOOD

INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGIST ?

: Once you have met Dr. Khilnani - can you pls give me your

assessment of him? I feel comfortable with him and feel I can trust him but

i am just wary because he has only done 50 UAE's. He also said that since

his wife - your gyne does not take insurance, he can recommend me to his

sister - in law who does. but again i don't feel the need to change gynes

again at this time. You can email me separately on this so we can exchange

stories.

Thanks

Nida

actually i was all set for UAE that but when my IR mentioned that he has

done 50 UAE procedures (but assisted on a lot) - isn't 50 quite a low number

to consider if one is qualified or not ?

Hi Nida,

One positive note here is that you have options. If I were you, I would

choose the least invasive procedure first.
