Does anyone know the statistics on fibroids growing back after a myo?

I am scheduled for surgery on 25th Feb. I just cannot decide between

a myo or a subtotal hyst (leaving in ovaries and cervix). I have

already had UAE which didn't work. I am 39 with no kids, but do not

want them now. The only disadvantage I can see with a hyst is that one

gets menopause between 2 and 4 years earlier than normal. Can anyone

help me in the decision. A big factor too is that I want my stomach

to go down!!

In her book " Sex, Lies, & the Truth About Uterine Fibroids, " Carla Dionne

(who moderates this list) wrote " A second round of fibroid growth after a

myomectomy happens about 25% of the time but generally requires additional

treatment (such as a second myomectomy or hysterectomy) only 10 percent of

the time. Generally, the older you are when you have a myomectomy, the less

likely it is that fibroids will recur or that you will need additional

treatment. "

On Oct. 18, 2003, another list member, Cecile, wrote that the potential

consequences of a hysterectomy include sexual dysfunction, depression,

bladder and bowel problems, and elevated heart disease.

I chose to have a myomectomy because I'd like to have another baby. But

even if I didn't want to get pregnant again, I would not have chosen a

hysterectomy. As this article points out, the medical community does not

have enough knowledge about the impact of hysterectomies:

Many women in the UterineFibroids group have chosen not to have a

hysterectomy. If you'd like to chat with women who are considering or have

had a hysterectomy, you may want to participate in the Hystersisters.com

message boards:
