Just read this on Ob.Gyn News - a report about fibroids and pregnancy. The

" evidence " is extremely conflicting here, so please take it with a grain of

salt, or perhaps a pound of it. The question is as it always is with

statistics - " fourfold of what " .

We have had so many women on the German list with fibroids have happy

pregnancies - and happy babies. So I don't want to worry anyone who ist

pregnant.

Community-based ongoing study

Small Fibroids Linked to Early Pregnancy Loss

Interim results suggest fibroids < 3 cm in diameter may raise miscarriage

risk fourfold.

HOUSTON Fibroids so small they are ignored by the widely used Muram

ultrasound criteria appear to have a profound association with spontaneous

abortion, perhaps explaining many early pregnancy losses, especially among

African American women.

Interim results of a community-based study reveal almost a fourfold risk of

spontaneous abortion among women who were found to have fibroids measuring

< 3 cm in diameter during early pregnancy. In contrast, patients with

fibroids > 3 cm in early pregnancy had no increased risk of a miscarriage.

I just saw 's message and have the following comments about the

research:

While the findings may be bourn out when the study is completed, this is

preliminary data and it will be necessary to see if the findings hold up

with larger numbers of women. Also, the research has not yet been published

or subjected to the scrutiny of peer review so it is not possible to

determine if there are any problems with the study.

The findings are contrary to a large meta-analysis (review of multiple

smaller studies) of 3,900 women published in 2002 by Dr. Pritts

that found no increase in miscarriage except for women who had fibroids

bulging into the uterine cavity.

The findings that a small fibroid within the wall of the uterus has a higher

risk of causing a miscarriage than a fibroid bulging into the cavity does

not make biologic sense unless there is an entirely different reason why

fibroids cause miscarriage than what is now believed. Also, the findings

that small fibroids cause more problems than big fibroids defies

explanation.

I will not be changing my recommendation to women until the research is

completed, published and reviewed.
