Sunny,

I asked the doctor who was scheduled to perform my myo (the one I

cancelled last Sept) if the surgery might disrupt my hormones and she

said yes very plainly. Changes in blood flow and the shock of the

disruption of the normal flow of things in your pelvis might just be

contributing to your irregularity.

I suggest that you have your hormones levels checked, a reproductive

endocrinologist is a specialist in this area. Due to your age you

might be dismissed as being neurotic I hate to say but you know how

doctors can be. Hopefully your doctor is amenable to the blood work

and/or referral so it isn't a battle.

Alternately you could try acupuncture to help get the energy flowing

in the right direction, but it would likely take more than one

treatment so you would need to commit to this treatment path for a

brief stretch of a few months I expect (based on my understanding of

how treatment works). My periods were starting to creep into the 8

day range at the end of last year and with acupuncture they started

to get more normal for me.

Let us know how it goes.

Dear Sunny,

I remember that during a visit with Dr. West last year, he mentioned that often

women who are near 50 or so, will go into menopause soon after a myomectomy. He

reasoned that there is something about the fibroids themselves that may prolong

peri-menopause. He said it has something to do with the fibroids and their

attraction to estrogen regarding their growth. He wasn't quoting any scientific

studies but said he had seen it happen often in some of his own age 50ish

patients.
