Hi everyone, my name is Sandy and I have been reading all the posts

and learning so many things. I am 55 years old and have extremely

heavy menstrual cycles, am borderline anemic and learned that I had

fibroid tumors about 1 1/2 years ago. They think that the fibroids

are interfering with my menepause so after the usual testings that

showed the fibroids I was scheduled for a hysteroscopy. I live in a

rural area in Illinois, which does not allow me many choices-2

OB/Gyn's and 1 hospital and since I don't have any health coverage-my

choices are extremely limited. I was scheduled for this procedure in

December'03 and was very anxious about it, as I have not had any

surgery other than childbirth. The doctor was 2 hours late which

gave me more time to stress about this and when it was time, they

walked me into the operating room where I immediately saw the nurse

getting out all the instruments etc.-they then proceeded to have me

get up on the table and lay me down where they put the oxygen mask

on. I did not like this mask as to me it felt like it was taking the

air from me not into me so I started to complain and they readusted

the mask, but now they were trying to strap my arms in an

outstretched position and I panicked. Needless to say I became very

frightened by all of this and started to gasp for air and then went

into a full blow panic attack, and decided this was not for me.

Since the doctor was still not in the room I asked to go home and

after they tried to calm me down, they let me walk back to the out-

patient room I started from and I quickly got dressed and practically

ran from the hospital. Unfortunately the reason I was there in the

first place has not gotten any better and since I obviously have a

phobia about the mask-I was wondering if there was a less evasive way

to have this procedure done. Any suggestions would really be

appreciated since I have to go back to the Dr. next week for a follow-

upand I want to be able to tell them I have more choices. Thank you

all so much.
