Well, it could probably be a while before you could get to a 4th

floor walkup. I am 3 months out of surgery and I would find that

difficult but doable at this point. However, if I had to do it

every day, I am sure I'd be used to it by now and I would have

regained the ability to climb stairs. I think that you will be ok

after about 4 weeks as long as you have no surgery complications (I

had blood loss and some unusual issues, so I am not the norm). I am

able to take the subway stairs and that did not take very long but I

am not able to leap those stairs like I used to yet. Also, you will

probably find that you won't want to carry much with you when you

start out at your apartment. good luck. Even with my complications

it was not so bad.

Hi, Naomi-

First of all best of luck on your surgery! Please let us know how it

goes.

For me, stairs weren't a problem for long, although four flights is a

lot. I doubt you'll need 4 weeks, though. Probably more like two, or

even less if you minimize number of trips up/down a day. I assume you

already have strong leg muscles!

Again, good luck

Hi Naomi:

I was able to walk up 4 flights of stairs about 3 weeks after my

myo, albeit very slowly. In my case I'd had several complications

so I think my recovery was slower than some others'. The best

thing is to let your body be the ultimate judge and don't push

yourself to do something just because you think you should be at

a certain level of recovery.

Good luck and be good to yourself. Let people help you!

Hi Naomi,

You will probably have no problems going up and down stairs already

on the 1st week (all depends on how fit you are now, and age might

play a part too. My mother had the same op. in her late 50s and said

she couldn't even think about walking outside her room for over a

week). However going up/down 4 flights will probably be do-able but

will exhaust you so much that you'll need a nap afterwards. I did it

when I was still in hospital (about day 4 or 5) and was very stupid

to have tried it. I was so tired I had to stay in bed the rest of the

day... So I'd say, don't try that so soon, and I agree with the other

post that you should minimise your trips as much as possible. I'd

wait at least 2 weeks before you do it anyway.

The trick is: listen carefully to your own body. You will feel fine

mentally and be fooled into thinking you can do more physically but

your body will remind you every time that you have NOT got the

stamina yet, so take it easy. The more you abuse your body the slower

you will recover, so take it easy ok?

Good luck!

Hmm. This is good to know. I have to walk up three flights of stairs

five days after my myo. I didn't even think about the fact I wouldn't

be able to so I didn't make other arrangements. From the sounds of it

may take me the day. Not good. I think I am in denial about how non

functional I am going to be.

Mine is 3/9

Best wishes to you!!!
