Hi

I had 2-6 cm fibroids & some smaller ones - my myo was May 17th & my doctor

removed 9 all together. I was on Lupron for 3 months prior to the surgery & had

no side-affects - I did have a mood swing for one day but that was it. The

Lupron shrunk one of my fibroids just a little but not a significant amount. I

was happy to be on Lupron as it stopped my bleeding for about 3 weeks - that was

the best part!! The myo was the best decision I made!

I didn't experience any depression but am not prone to it. If you have any more

questions, please let me know. cherinvan@....

Thanks,

Cheryl

Thanks for your help. I'm more scared of the Lupron than surgery

, I had the Lupron done in the mid 9o's. The medicine put me into a

temperate menopause. The Lupron did not even touch my tumors. I had a myo

done in '98 and the doctor got all the tumors, but they made a return back

last year. When they did they come full force, the size of my now is a

newborn baby's head. I know that some women have had the tumors to return

but not as big as what I have got. Are you having heavy bleeding and the

bloating feeling? You might want to check into the UAE procedure. I know my

OBGYN did not tell me about this procedure, but I myself would do anything

to keep from having major surgery. I wish you the best of luck. I am having

a MRI done tonight and hopefully having the UAE on the 18 of this month.

Lupron is a difficult drug at best and makes myo

surgery more difficult as it makes the tumor mushy.

Lupron in the first three months at twice the normal

dose made me irritable. It was very unpleasant and

that was the mental effect only; physically it didn't

help much. After my first dose I continued to bleed

to the point that some twenty days later had to have

my first large transfusion (3 units) and nine days

after that I needed a larger one(4 units plus a

clotting agent). At that point I had to add a drug

called Megace to stop the bleeding. I would never

chose this Lupron option again. It may have been a

contributing factor to my needing two myos in one

year. (because it masked the tumor being a tumor) It

could hide smaller tumors, make them mushy, add to

your chance of doing this twice.

Lupron is approved ONLY to control bleeding and taking

it for any other use is a roll of the dice. For me it

didn't even due what it was supposed to do.

Those are the facts but it is your choice.

Hi

I took Lupron for 3 months prior to my abdominal myomectomy and had

no problem with mood swings. I haven't had problems with depression

in my life though.I had hot sweats and a few " aches and

pains " but it was livable.

Lupron is controversial, but I made the decision that was right for

me. This process has helped me in learning to follow my own

instincts about myself and my body. I always started by doing the

research, as you are doing. If you have misgivings, listen

to yourself. Good luck to you.

Hi,

I took the 3 months of Lupron before my myo. Didn't stop my bleeding and didn't

shrink my fibroid. The fibroid actually grew. I had ALL of the bad side effects.

It was the worse. I have never felt like this. I won't ever take this drug

again. I have to say if there's anything Kubby (hubby) fears more than sharks

and sneaky giant squids, it's a woman with fibroids on Lupron.

I'd skip it and do the surgery without it. It didn't work, just caused more

problems. It's up to you. Other women have mild side effects. Do take calcium if

you take it.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post about Lupron. I guess I

will have to follow my Dr's advice or she probably won't do my

surgery. Today I talked to a second Dr., different office, and he

agreed I should take Lupron. Maybe I'll get lucky like some of you

who didn't have problems. If not, will be glad it will only be for

about 4 months of symptoms. Just hope in the future they can develop

a better drug for women other than Lupron. Feel sorry for women who

have to take it longer term for endometriousis.

Thanks again.

Hi . I'm in my 2nd month of Lupron. It has stopped my bleeding so far, I

have occasional hot flashes & I have mild mood swings ( my husband might

disagree with that one). I also don't have near the bloating that I had before

starting this injection. But, I know that every woman reacts to this drug

differently. You need to do what is best for you & listen to your body. If the

side effects are too much to handle, add-back med. is an option. In my opinion,

a skilled surgeon won't have trouble removing a fibroid if it is mushy. Good

luck in your decision.

I dont post here often mainly because i know i will only get upset at

what i read here and i need to stay calmer these days for health

reasons. But i jsut cant let this one go by.

Stay away from LUpron!!! There was a web site www.lupronvictims.com

but it has been inaccessible for awhile now due to owners updating

it. They seem to take forever at it though. It is full of incredible

info on Lupron.

Also, if yoiu talk to Dr. Stanley West he will tell you to stay away

from Lupron before a myo as it only makes the removal of fibroids

more difficult. It makes them softer and less well defined. It also

doesnt really shrink them much.

Also, the ssri antidepressants are not safe. There is a lot in the

news lately about them. Please please be careful.

If i can be of any further help, feel free to contact me via my

email. I am sorry if i have repeated anythign that others may have

said here already in response.

I haven't had time to read all the replies to your question.

My largest is 10cm and I will not have to take Lupron before the myo.

I think Dr.'s differ in their preference, and if you are really

worried about it maybe you can find a 3rd (or 4th) Dr. that can do

the myo without the Lupron.

Hi Miranda,

Thanks for your post and encouragement. Glad to see your Lupron

symptoms aren't bad. Good about the less bloating too. I agree about

a good surgeon being able to remove a mushy fibroid. Dr. said the

Lupron was to shrink the fibroid and didn't mention to control

bleeding. I like the idea of having less chance of requiring a

transfusion because of using Lupron.

BTW, do you have 1 or multiple fibroids, what sizes and what kind of

surgery are you scheduled for? I keep thinking about a hystrectomy

(leave ovaries) since I'm 43 and no children planned.

Hi :

I was on Lupron for 3 months before my myo. I had a very good experience. It

was GREAT to not have to worry about my period for 3 months. I experienced mild

hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and I was a bit emotional at times---although I

was working on my dissertation, so it was to be expected. I had gone to a

second Dr. who didn't believe in Lupron, however, I went with my original Dr.

Took the Lupron, had the myo in April, and my recovery has been very good.

Before making the decision, I read horror stories on the internet, however, for

me, Lupron was very tolerable. In fact, it gave me peace of mind to not have to

suffer through the cramps and bleeding. Let me know if I can help. Best

wishes, stay positive---that helps a lot!!! Jackie

Hi . I have an 8 cm fibroid, a 6 cm. fibroid & several small ones. Are

you taking iron? I'm not scheduled for surgery yet but a myo is what I will

need. That's what all the dr's are suggesting in my case. I've had insurance

complications w/ the dr. I was going to have a myo w/ so I have to go to a

different one in July. I've been to 3 different dr's & they all suggested the

Lupron. I'll tell you it's an expensive drug though & if you have a hyst, would

you even need to take this? Take care.

I've been on Lupron for five months. I was anemic and it stopped the

bleeding enough so that I can now have surgery without a transfusion.

My blood is now close to normal. One of my fibroids was 20 cm, and

there are other small ones. The big one now is 18cm. It hardly

shrunk at all. I took Activella to mitigate the side effects of the

Lupron, and a side effect of those two drugs is high blood pressure.

I am now on high blood pressure medicine, too. I am thin and active,

and a vegetarian, and have not had high blood pressure before, so I'm

sure it's the drugs.

Don't count on Lupron shrinking the fibroids. The Lupron allowed me

to finish the school year without taking time off. I teach

kindergarten.

If I had it to do over again, I don't know if I'd take Lupron. I

probably would have just had the surgery. For me the only problem

has been the high-blood pressure. I feel fine other than that.

It's expensive, and I don't know how safe it is, but my main concern

was dealing with the anemia, and continuing to work.

A nurse said that it probably kept it from growing. Yikes! It's big

enough.

I'm going in for an abdominal hysterectomy on Tuesday. I plan to keep

my ovaries. I'm 45.
