Guest guest
I am 30 years old and I am scheduled for a myo on April 29th. I have no children but may want them one day. I have 3 fibroids one is 17cm by 11cm. My uterus is very distorted, due to this my gyn is afraid he may not be able to save my uterus. He said my uterus is so large that it may not be repairable once fibroids are removed. He stated he will not remove all the fibroids. I am so afraid to have the myo. My gyn wants to give me a Lupron injection to see if my fibroids will shrink. I am having a hard time accepting my rights of bearing children, more than likely, will be taken away. Any info will help, I live in Pennsylvania...(links, personal experience etc., doctors) Thanks.
Guest guest
Cancel your myo and find a new GYN. I went to three GYNS who said the same thing about my uterus. I found one in Boston who said all of that was a myth. I had a myo two weeks ago - 21 fibroids were removed. Two were the size of a grapefruit. I was told i should have no problem having children. I am 36 so any problems will be do to my age not my uterus. Where in PA? There is a Dr. Glassner in Philly who is recommended. I live in NE PA and ended up going to Boston for my surgery. The extra expense was worth it! The reason I did not go to Dr. Glassner is he did not take Blue Cross. Another reason to cancel - my gyn told me a story of taking out fibroid of woman whose uterus was the size of 9 month pregnancy (YIKES!) - she was able to get pregant. Guest guest
To tdcraig 610, In response to your request for a doctor recommendation in Pennsylvania, I would highly recommend Dr. Krauss. He operated on me years ago for a cyst and now I travel an hour to see him for the fibroid problems. He has 2 offices in Phila, his # is . He is extremely knowledgeable and cares about his patient's emotional well-being. Everything Dr. Krauss has advised me about fibroid treatment has turned about to be too true when I did my research. Good luck and try to believe that it will all work out. Alisa
Guest guest
It sounds like your doc is telling you he isn't confident he can do this surgery. He's holding up a red flag. Say NO to Lupron. It's a nasty drug. You need a reproductive endocronologist. You have a better chance of keeping your fertility that way. Check out the physician database. What kind of insurance do you have? Definitely look at Glassner (Phila.) http://www.allaboutfibroids.com/ Seek second, third, fourth opinions, etc. whatever it takes. Good luck. Guest guest
Some possible ways a uterus might be shrunk include: * Pre-op shrinking drugs * UAE (UFE) * The surgeon comining different techniques, if appropriate. * Cutting things up into smaller pieces while still inside you There could be other ways of shrinking and cutting down, but I don't know if all fibroid attacking methods like myolisis are appropriate for your aims and case?? Weight loss can help with naturally over weight wmen, but keep your strength up, bear in mind the fibroids can make someone look overweight, get nutritional advice from the doctor and don't go on any unbalanced mad trendy dumb theory diets...(My eyes are blue and I like petunias so I can't eat fruit). (Just cut down in a balanced sensible way). Well fibroids this large are likely to be problemmatic for any surgeon. Still, if I were in your position I would have a chat with a gyn surgeon who has a good reputation who would recommend shrinking drugs or UAE who could be trusted to recommend UAE and shrinking drugs when they were appropriate for a patient and not when they weren't. In your case something like that may well be appropriate. You may well hve to set the inconvenience of unpleasant side effects against the benefits of shrinking. I guess with UAE, there may be some other consideration apart from establishing what the risks are to fertility, some books and doctors raise. Some treatments may also change the 'consistency'?? I'd try and get in contact with someone to chat. If they are in another country they won't have a vested interest, only a vested bias. heck out the Yahoo embo forum and Nigel Hacking's posts on Smartgroups who performs UAE, but recently left the group The Melbourne Fibroid clinic has a web site. Their book mentioned combining techniques to tackle fibroids. Have a look at the sites of some of these doctors mentioned on the forums. I think any surgeon would want to warn you of the dangers of this turning into a hysterectomy. They need to prepare you for this possibility which is more likely in your case than some others. You need to establish wether your surgeon is able to do this, compared with other surgeons. Bear in mind, he who markets himself well and blows his/her own trumpet isn't always the best in their field. Word of mouth is useful and talking to your surgeon directly about their reservations or confidence in it going well. See if anyone in the archives had a good operation experience with very large fibroids . PubMed may have some article on this. Just search the keyword 'PubMed'. If you feel the need for a second opinion do get one, as you may kick yourself if you don't and wind up with a hysterectomy you did't want. Do do all the research you can, but remember your operation date will come quickly and it's helpful if you don't cancel on the day of the operation itself! I'm not sure I understand you. Fibroids are made of muscle tissue -- losing weight (fat) will not have an effect on them. It may make the surgery easier for the surgeon...please enlighten. Guest guest
Dear I found a few support groups you could phone that are very informative and could assist you before your surgery. One is the HERS foundation located in PA. and the national fibroids foundation 1 toll free. You can actually speak to someone and have counseling on the phone. The HERS foundation will bill you for the counseling after the phone call. The other consultation is free. If I were you I would not settle for any doctor. You need a skilled doctor who can repair your uterus for pregnancy later. The HERS foundation will refer you to very skilled doctors who perform lots of myos thus increasing your chances of saving your uterus for future pregnancy. Never settle for excellent care when it concerns your body. Hope this info helps you! > I am 30 years old and I am scheduled for a myo on April 29th. I have > no children but may want them one day.
