confused about incisions

Hi all -

There has been some discussion lately re: vertical vs. horizontal incisions.

Some doctor's claim that they cannot perform a horizontal (bikini)

incision for larger uteri. I noticed a post from someone just recently that

stated

her doctor told her that if she did a bikini incision, she might have to cut

the muscles.

ne on this list just had a successful myo with Dr. West and she had a

bikini incision with an apparently very large uterus. She said the Dr. West

didn't cut the muscles, just pushed them out of the way. My question is, why

don't all doctor's do this? Is the ability to do a bikini incision for a

large uterus a significant skill? I don't understand why some doctor's can do

a bikini incision for a big uterus, and other's claim that vertical is all

they can do. I completely understand that being able to remove fibroids from

a

uterus requires great skill on the doctor's part, but does being able to do a

bikini incision require great skill? Any answers? I was shaken up and

questioned my doctor's skill when she commented that she would have to do a

vertical incision on me because of the size of my fibroids. My uterus is not

as big as ne's was, and she had a positive experience with Dr. West.

HELP! If anyone understands this, please chime in. If you don't understand

like me, please feel free to express opinions!

Thanks

Amy

Hi,

It's about the skill level of the doctor. This is my understanding from talking

to my doctors. You really want the BEST doc you can find. Not only do you not

want them cutting your muscles. YOU DO NOT WANT THEM TOUCHING YOUR BOWELS. If

they pull part of your intestines out or move them around a lot, they can NOT

put them back in the same way. Later this means you're at a higher risk of have

problems with impacted bowels as you get older. My doc made it a point to

discuss this before surgery and it's one of the things he told my hubby after

surgery. He did not touch my bowels. So I had a good size fibroid, didn't get my

muscles cut or my bowels touched and had a bikini cut.

I would ask a lot of questions to the doc doing the surgey. One woman said her

doc said he did a lot of myos, 20 a year. My doc does 12-20 a month. He said

they were easy to do. So the more the better I say.
