Guest guest
It sounds right to me. If your blood count is too low the surgery is way too risky. I take slow fe and I eat a red meat (like a steak from outback steakhouse) and green veggies. When I'm bleeding/period or whatever u want to call it. I take 2 slow fe/day. My RE put me on iron and I'll be on it for almost 2 months prior to surgery on June 1st. He said all women, especially one's of childbearing age should take iron once a day. My last bloodwork was done at the end of April and my dr (pulmonary) said all looks great...no anemia. I'm looking for the same results at pre-op on May 26th. Calm down, I'm sure it will all work out. I use spinach leaves in my salads instead of iceberg lettuce. With a little raspberry vinigrette, u'll never notice the difference, but ur body will! Guest guest
Hi, The ER doc thought transfusion was too risky with what might be in the blood. She thought tranfusion should be for emergency only. My counts were lower than yours. The ER doc had my safety at heart. Your doc is right to delay surgery because of this. It takes some time but slow FE iron (slow release iron) will bring your counts back up. Take it with vitamin C for better absorbtion. Sam's Club and (one lady here said Kroger) have the best prices. You can get it about anywhere, Walmart, Kmart, drug stores... You may want to consider a iron infusion. This will get your counts up more quickly. It would be less risky than transfusion. If you need a transfusion, maybe a family member could give the blood but it's doubtful. You can give it some time with the Slow FE iron, get an iron infusion or get the transfusion. The iron infusion can get your counts up quicker than Slow FE iron. It's up to you. I did the Slow FE iron but others have did the iron infusion and a few did transfusion. So all are done. The choice is yours but you do have several choices. Guest guest
Hi again, They also have iron injections that can get your iron counts up quickly. Iron infusions are given through a IV. So here's another option for you. Ku

Guest guest
Hey Sonya - There could be another option for you, other than transfusion. I too was diagnosed with anemia - my numbers were 8.6. I have been prescribed some iron supplements and will get more blood drawn 4 weeks from when I started the iron. My doc thought that I might be up to 10 by then, but we'll see. You might want to ask your doc if that is something that could work for you, too. Good luck! Hang in there! Guest guest
My doctor is really afraid of transfusions. My blood count was 6 after my myo, 5 weeks ago. I have been taking a prescription strength iron supplement daily. At my 3 week check my count was up to 10. Guest guest
Hi Sonya- Your doctor is right to be concerned - your hemoglobin is too low. My doctors recommended a hgb of 10.5. My resection myo was exactly a year ago today! I had 5 weeks to bring up my counts and I did it via iron infusions. I have posted about this from time to time here when the subject comes up - try a search through the archives using " iron infusion " as your key words. Another member of this list, a friend, who also was a bleeder before her myo, had infusions and they worked out great for her, too. Neither of us had any bad reaction to it and in fact felt better almost immediately - no huffing & puffing uphill, no more dizziness. Once a week until ferritin and the other stuff comes up is the way to go. I was about where you are now with hgb at 8, and had almost no ferritin reserves. You will need the help of a hematologist to shepherd you through this kind of therapy. I had an extra " dose " the weekend before my surgery, which coincided with my period, which was a good thing. Insurance should cover this - mine did. I'm glad that your doctor insists that you get your blood counts up. I know it's difficult when you're so eager to get it all over with, but it won't take long to get where you'll need to be. I don't read the posts every day and am not acquainted with all of your details, but hopefully you can reschedule your surgery within a short period of time, just long enough to get those counts up. Good luck, and try not to worry.
