Shellie...your flag went in the mail tonight....should be there in 5-

7 days.Great talking to you on the phone tonight!!

I wanted to ask for a roll-call on how many of you have difficulty

with the following:

Spastic esophagus causing pain after eating.Spasms in muscles

surrounding stomach...especially after eating. Spasms in diaphgragm

and cramping of chest wall muscles resulting in difficulty breathing

and reduced lung capacity.

I am asking these questions because these are the areas I am

stuggling with the most right now. I talked to a respirologist and

dietician/speech therapist at the ALS/PLS Clinic. I use the Ambu bag

for the lung thing....but i am almost on the verge of giving up

eating...as it is too painful. The alternative is to eat tiny

amounts of soft foods several times a day.

Anyone else have these problems.....any suggestions??

Take good care friends! Hug!

did you read the article on Pyshconeuroimmunology if not, i

recommend it highly, EVA found this and i beleive it really applies

alot to us . This is why i also recommend mind calming excersizes

(THI CHI etc etc )we tend to get ourselves rather ANXIOUS being that

we have a problem that no one can help us with other than this Group

I have noticed when im Anxious i have more pronounced symptoms than

when im quiet and relaxed . So try this and see if it does'nt help

I know i do have some respiratory problems and diaphram issues but

being that we get very little proffessional help we need to try what

works to survive this disease .So give it a try and see if you get

any resolution from it . GEO

Hey Di,

Geo has great point about how breathing problems and anxiety go hand in hand

and fuel each other....many of the patients i have seen in later stage pulmonary

diseases come in for their panic attacks and anxiety issues---am sure you have

encountered that professionally. i know you know all of that and know of the

breathing exercises and imagry stuff to calm down nervous system----other than

the diaphramatic breathing, I require a cd or taped version of the guided

exercises to be able to do them. just a thought evoked from Geo's thought!

I haven't been dx wiht PLS, but at this point HSP. But even this my neuro

wants it confirmed by somene wiht more experience in HSP and/or PLS. So

waiting for appt to Shands.

Anyway, for several years I have episodes of major pain in my chest area

when I get something tough (like a piece of steak), it feels like it gets

stuck going on. I also have episodes of after eating I gag, choke like I

have a knot in my throat although i have no food, and have finished eating.

Other thing recently having episodes of like all sudden I gasp for air. I

can be sitting up, laying down, involved in like watching TV, or reading

etc... its like I am so focused on what I am doing i forget to breath. That

probably isn't what is happening just only way I can explain it. Often I

will have similiar episodes where then I start coughing.

For couple years I have episodes of air hunger. Again I can be sitting,

laying down (which seems more often) or esp have like climbing stairs. It

feels like I am not getting enough air, so have to take real deep breaths

several times.

Eating thing my issue has been more no matter what I eat or drink, the food

is up and out before I know it. It's not like reflux. My rheum (who moved

out of state in Nov) said this sounded like esphogeal motility sp? or

something like that. She explained that i am having a spasm in the

esphosogus that instead of pushing to food down it's pushing it up.

Swallowing can be an issue at times.

All of my issues though are episodic. Some days no problem at all, other

days I just don't want to eat or drink. Get nervous when going out to eat

with friends now days as never know if going to have a problem or not. I am

getting i guess indegestion and reflux though now too depending on what i

eat or how much. this is different than the food coming up/out without

warning.

I have informed doctors of episodes of air hunger, had a full cardiac workup

which showed no heart or circulation problems. Rheum and primary, oh new

neuro informed of this eating with food coming up/out. I think i have

informed doctors of the above except this newer thing of all sudden like

gasp for air, like forget to breath.

I am at a point though its like why inform doctors of anything anymore.

Doesn't seem to matter, they may not even put it in their notes that i

informed them. Maybe if i get into Shands someone will listen too all my

symptoms that are consistent, episodic, etc... and put pieces together.

Whether that is one thing going on or several things in way of diagnosis.

Sorry I am not of help to you but wish you the best.

Thanks Geo. i did read Evas stuff. I do meditation ...it SHOULD be

daily....but at least 3-4 times a week. i do find it really helps.

yes! There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that stress increases

symptoms....you're right. I think I should get back to my aquasize!

It is also true that it is scarier when you have a disease no one

has heard of!

Take care Geo!

Yes Tawny....the guided imagery meditations work best. I used to use

one. Seems like I am saying 'used to' a lot! Hmmmm. Guess i better

get back at it. I still meditate....but the guided imagery taped

always worked better.

Thanks for your suggestions Tawny.

Marfla...thank you...you have described my symptoms pretty close.

Yes...it is frustrating, as doctors can't do much. Except more

drugs...which I don't need!

I guess, in the end, this group is more helpful in a practical way

than any doctors!

Sending you healing thoughts!

I second that Di and hope you can find the energy and strenth to start doing

some of those things you " used to do " so that you are not as focused on the fear

of what is happening to you!! a bit scared for you down here in fl!

I have a on going cough (which I previusly shared with this group). My lungs

appear to pass the pulmonologist tests, because he had no clue why I cough. He

put me on 3 types of inhalers. I went to a allergist who put me on meds. Then I

went to Gastro. who did a endoscopy and swallow test (all showed good) and put

me on Prilosec and Nexium (3rd time for nexium) for reflux and my cough is still

here.

It feels like a cramping in the chest wall and I feel like I am short of

breath, When I talk I have to stop and inhale deep. Also, when I am lying down

all of a sudden I will take a deep breath of air (dont intend to), which sounds

like what you do Di. gary d.

Questions about Esophagus and Breathing Problems

Hi friends,

Hug!

get checked for Hyatial Hernia this is common and can mimic

breathing problems .This is where the Esophagus, just above the

Diaphram it exspands or swells restricting the lung exspansion .Ive

had this and the Prilosec helps me so far. Staying quiet alot is

very helpful the more im riled the more it exspands . Anxiety is a

very big thing for us ,eliminting it is a must . It causes all kinds

of secondary symptoms . and being that we have these kinds of

problems it only worsens ours. I know we have Diaphram problems also

but this adds to it. GEO

Geo and Flora: I had a endoscopy 2 weeks ago and the gastro said he saw no signs

of hiatal hernia. He gave me samples of prilosec and nexium and the cough and

chest ache subsided. I have since run out of prilosec and cough is back with

chest cramping. Isnt prilosec and nexium treat the same problem/ do you know?

Hernia this is common and can mimic

breathing problems .This is where the Esophagus, just above the

Diaphram it exspands or swells restricting the lung exspansion .Ive

had this and the Prilosec helps me so far. Staying quiet alot is

very helpful the more im riled the more it exspands . Anxiety is a

very big thing for us ,eliminting it is a must . It causes all kinds

of secondary symptoms . and being that we have these kinds of

problems it only worsens ours. I know we have Diaphram problems also

but this adds to it. GEO

group). My lungs appear to pass the pulmonologist tests, because he

had no clue why I cough. He put me on 3 types of inhalers. I went to

a allergist who put me on meds. Then I went to Gastro. who did a

endoscopy and swallow test (all showed good) and put me on Prilosec

and Nexium (3rd time for nexium) for reflux and my cough is still

here.

short of breath, When I talk I have to stop and inhale deep. Also,

when I am lying down all of a sudden I will take a deep breath of

air (dont intend to), which sounds like what you do Di. gary d.

Hi im on Prilosec OTC now and it does wanders for me ,i have to

make sure i dont forget though or the next day it comes back with a

vengence .Yap when you stopped that acid started coming back up into

your lungs ?? then causes chest to cramp ? if you read a little

about bad Reflux it can cause lung cancer in some cases from the

reflux repeatedly getting into the lungs and throat . What did your

gastro say ?? GEO
