I've heard that belly dancing is traditionally performed by Arab

women to strengthen the muscles used in sex and childbirth and during

childbirth a group of women will dance for the woman giving birth to

remind her how strong and supple her body is - a form of

encouragement. Haven't heard of it as a treatment for fibroids and

infertility before but I imagine it would improve blood flow in the

pelvic region as well. Does anyone know more?

Carla,

How ironic that you post this particular article. A few months ago, a

good friend of mine was telling me how she and her husband would be

spending their wedding anniversary dining at their favorite Middle

Eastern restaurant. She was telling me about the belly dancers who

entertained at this place and commented that, " these women have some

powerful pelvic and abdominal muscles. " We joked that maybe I should

take up belly dancing to " shake your fibroids away " as my friend put

it. We were kidding but half serious. The advantages would have to

include increased blood flow to the pelvis, increased sexual response

and weight loss as well as developing muscle tone. Since then, I've

thought seriously about getting a video that would teach me how to do

it at home so I won't have to go to a class. I'll try anything......

Yoga is also good for the reproductive system. In my

book, YOGA: The Path to Holistic Health " by

B.K.S.Iyengar, it mentions that the position Salamba

Savangasana... " improves bowel movements and relieves

colitis, alleviates urinary disorders, helps to treat

hernia, helps to treat a prolapsed uterus and reduces

uterine FIBROIDS, relieves congestion and heaviness in

the ovaries and helps to treat ovarian cysts, and

reduces menstrual cramps and helps to regulate

menstrual flow " ... among other things (but it should

not be practiced during menstruation). It's the

position where, while lying on your back, you *swing*

your feet up in the air and keep them there while

supporting the back with your hands...it's not the

easiest thing to explain.;-)

Also, a Swiss/German woman named Adelheid Ohlig cane

up with a type of yoga called LUNA YOGA, specifically

geared toward women, and it supposedly helps immensely

with fertility and reproductive issues. You can get

the book on Amazon.com in English. It's another

approach to taking our health into our own hands.
