Hi guys I have a question for you all. Have any of you been told that your

spine has narrowed in the neck area or at the end of it. There has been a

discuss on the HSP side that they have narrowing at the neck area. I have

narrowing at the end of my spine.......

Jo, No sugery for me, I don't think i want anyone messing around with my

spine anymore. It was talked about on the HSP side that for some surgery was

required. My doc never said anymore about it. I'm going to address the

question to him when I see him and my worry is that it may have thinned out

more.

just what to know...............Flora

Yes Flora, I had surgery for spinal stenosis in Jan. 2001 for narrowing of the

spinal cord which they called at that time 'spinal stenosis'. They said the

spinal cord was being strangled because of arthritis and they thought that was

the cause of the spasticity in my legs..............not, as after the surgery my

symptoms started getting worse about 6 weeks after that. I guess the surgery

was needed anyway as it would have caused paralysis had it not been done. It

was C3-4-5 & 6 that had to be fused.

Are they suggesting that you have to do something about it? Hope not. Let me

know please.

Take care.

Jo

Hi Flora,

Now THAT is srrange. yes, with my last MRI, they X-rayed my neck and

said the discs have degenerated and the spine has narrowed there. My

2 neuros feel it has nothing to do with my PLS, just a degenerative

disc disease.....but....now i wonder.HMMMM.

Hugs!

Maureen, I found out about my spine in the early years when my present

neurologist was trying to find out what the heck I had. To rule out MS he sent

me

to a specialist at Tampa General Hospital. The MS doctor looked at my MRI

and said oh look the spine is narrow at the end. Dummy me didn't ask about it

but remember I was scared to death as to what was wrong with me. I'd

forgotten about it until someonestarted talking about their spine being narrow

at

the neck area,. I plan on brining it up with my neurologist as to why it

happens .................Flora

Hi Flora,

Yes, I have narrowing of the spine also somewhere in the mid region I

think. A neurogenetic doctor saw it and totally dismissed it as

nothing to be concerned about and my latest neuro just said he will

keep an eye on it. He didnt seem overly concerned either.

Flora, if your neuro hasnt ordered any follow up MRI's, since

thinning was first noted, then he or she is not concerned and I

wouldnt worry about it.

Funny, can you believe that I am telling you not to worry about

something!! Always its the other way around!!

I too was told years ago (12 years ago), after one of my first MRI's that my

spine looked thin at the bottom. This opinion came from a doctor at the MRI

lab. I was in the MRI chamber so long all I wanted to do was leave so I

didn't go into more detail. The doctor that saw me originally didn't mention

narrowing to me. I have recently completed a second set of MRI's and the

narrowing was not mentioned to me by a leading neurologist.

I have also been tested for the 3 HSP genes at Athena labs and come up

negative for all three of them. This leads me to believe that I am back to my

original spine narrowing opinion. It sure gets frustrating trying to find

the cause or causes of our conditions. I have a feeling that some of the HSP

genes are not related and effect different parts of our bodies, spine,

nerves, brain, etc. One might have a bone spine channel problem, while

another

person might have the actual axon thinning and not the spinal tracts, or both.

I'm sure I would feel better knowing where the problem was with myself.

lol. I guess we will know more with more time and research.

i too have degenerative disc disease in cervical spine but had this since the

90's (geez, guess that was in my mid 20's). those certainly is exacerbated by

the spasms in my shoulders and neck area. no narrowing as of aug of um, nearly

4 years ago now. haven't had a repeat and only think that there would be more

degenerating discs if we did a repeat, so figure there is no real point.

interesting about ya'll's narrowing tho.....cannot wait to hear what doc says

about that flora when you ask next time. di, did you happen to ask about that?
