My question is 'isn't it better to start off with a diagnostic

outpatient surgery than laparatomy?? I have quite a bit of pain but I

don't want to go to the extreme this early, I just was diagnosed with

a fibroid in late March/early April.

Thanks.

Ardette:

I think the answer to that depends a lot on what your pelvic ultrasound

reports have said about your fibroids and ovaries over a period of time--and how

closely the findings corollate with your symptoms.

The good thing about a laparoscopy is that it can have BOTH diagnostic AND

therapeutic value for endometriosis .

I had two lap surgeries performed for various gyn/GI problems, during which

time the gynecologist removed all the sites of endometriosis present.

I distinctly remember that gyno approaching me in the recovery area, after

the surgery, He showed me photos from the operation.

" Tsk-tsk! " he said, shaking his head as if in horror. " That uterus! That

uterus! It's gotta come out!!!! " Maybe it was the morphine coursing through my

veins, but, at the time, I didn't think my uterus looked particularly gruesome

in the photos--and I certainly wasn't buying the " had to come out " line.

That was....1996...This " G.O.D. " (Gyno of Doom) also predicted that my endo

would progress to the point that I would BEG him for a " hysty. "

Contrary to his dire prediction, progress it did NOT. No trace of endo since

then, I'm happy to report.

> Thanks for posting, I am due to talk to the doctor by phone on

Monday, what you said about laprascopy being both diagnostic and for

treatment is exactly what I have read, webmed.com has been very

helpful. Today I am pain free, my period ended on Thursday which

probably has a lot to do with it plus I was quite active today doing

yard work etc. If a laparotomy is needed I would rather wait it out

until it is absolutly necessary.
