controll thru hormone therapy?

I've been on BCP for 15 years now, and have had one myo (8/98) and

am told that I have a new crop of fibroids growing. My gyn

suggested hysterectomy. But, I am not having any symptoms right

now. I'm in the process of seeking other opinoions.

I was reading in Carla Dionne's book last night, and a thought

occurred to me. If these buggers are growing because of a hormonal

imbalance, then why can't they be controlled with hormone therapy?

Also, does it make sense to have our glands that control the release

of estrogen and progestoren (and other hormones?) tested, to rule

out a problematic gland?

Has anyone ever tried to control the growth thru hormone therapy? I

thought I read in Carla's book that sometimes, if you start using a

progesterone cream after a myo, the growth of future fibroids can be

slowed. Has anyone ever tried that? Success, or not? I am seeing a

RE tomorrow and plan on asking him his thoughts on hormone therapy.

Thanks for your input.

There are lots of interrelationships of the hormones and

physiological systems of our bodies that contribute to fibroids

growth. Many of these haven't been studied in depth yet. Genetics,

environmental factors and lifestyle probably contribute as well.

This article from Brigham & Womens Hospital's Center for Uterine

Fibroid explains about current theories of fibroid formation from a

Western perspective:

http://www.fibroids.net/html/theories.htm

I have used natural progesterone cream (NPC) a few months ago, after

having a pooled progesterone (aka CD 21) blood test in the Fall that

showed that I was low progesterone. I'm 33, have regular cycles (like

clock-work since I was 14) and was never on birth control pills, just

FYI.

I didn't notice any growth from using the NPC, I did feel growth

prior to that in the fall after the stress of scheduling and

cancelling surgery. I did notice a few benefits during my luteal

phase such as more even mood, cervical fluid dried up mpre than

usual, breasts didn't hurt as much. Still hormones are very powerful

and should be used with some involvement from your care provider and

only after you've have hormonal testing done to see what's up. Also,

you might only need to use them for a short while to replenish your

stores if you have been out of balance but you probably don't need to

use them forever.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause talks more about

the use of NPC to treat a variety of ailments. There are mentions of

women shrinking their fibroid with NPC in the book but no details of

pre and post measurements. Dr Lee passed away last Fall but you can

visit his website here: http://www.johnleemd.com/index.html

Dr Lee recommended ZRT Lab for saliva testing of hormones:

I'm not using NPC now since I moved over to try acupuncture and

chinese medicine/herbs; I didn't want to confuse or negate my

treatments. Acupuncture has provided the greatest relief so far and I

will post more tangible results when I have them. For now I've

noticed a reduction in pelvic pressure, fibroid isn't jabbing me as

much -- it has gotten very quiet, and I'm not having this weird

feeling in my upper thigh any longer that started up in October any

longer. If I press on my abdomen it still feels sensitive in the area

where my fibroid is located.
