Guest guest
Congratulations Carla on being vindicated in your quest to learn more about the causes of uterine fibroids! I'm really impressed:-) You must be very good at understanding the intricacies of medical research and really able to extrapolate from it to have been able to make the connection between artheriosclerosis and uterine fibroids. You have inspired me so I decided to have another look at the DIM supplement (indole 3 carbinol) which you wrote about. I'm frustrated because I keep hearing about all this great anecdotal evidence of it shrinking fibroids yet what you wrote here concerned me greatly, naturally. You said this in an earlier post: " DIM has been on an uphill incline in the research world since 1995. There has been some efficacy shown in prostate cancer research -- but much more needs to be studied before I would recommend anyone just " try " this potential solution on their own. For instance, it does disturb me that fish treated with DIM in studies have acquired liver cancer. Success with prostate cancer only to possibly promote liver cancer? Granted, a supplement showing success with prostate cancer would definitely be of interest to those looking into treatments for a wide variety of other hormonally-associated tumors... Admittedly, I don't understand all of the research underway -- but have read enough confusing details regarding findings... " Okay, I am concerned about this because I was thinking about taking DIM and want to really know all I can before trying this supplement. I am glad you encourage us to read, read, read and learn, learn, learn, before utilizing any solution for our fibroids. I agree with you, this is good and responsible advice. I went to PubMed as you suggested, here is the study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstra\ ct&list_uids=12597433 I admit that I found that study difficult to understand too! So, I also looked for something that would break it down for me and I thought you might be interested in this too and of course all the members of this list as well. I wanted a reliable source and not just one of the companies trying to sell the product. Success! Here you go: http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/ind_0315.shtml This is the online version of the Physician's Desk Reference which MD's, hospitals and pharmacists use as a reference. from this: " Researh Summary I3C has significantly reduced the number of tumor-bearing animals and the number of tumors per animal, compared with controls, in an animal model of spontaneous mammary tumorogenesis. I3C, administered after carcinogen initiation, also significantly inhibited chemically induced mammary tumors. Aflatoxin-induced tumors in fish were inhibited by I3C when given before exposure to aflatoxin. On the other hand, I3C appeared to promote aflatoxin-induced tumor activity when given after initiation with aflatoxin in these animals. In a rat study, however, I3C had inhibitory effects on aflatoxin-induced tumor formation when given both before and after aflatoxin exposure. More research on this issue is needed. Still other animal studies have demonstrated that I3C exerted protective effects of various types against cancers of the endometrium, lung, tongue, colon and liver. Cell culture work has shown that HPV proliferation was inhibited by the action of I3C. Subsequently, it was shown that feeding I3C to nude mice significantly inhibited the formation of papillomatous cysts. This, in turn, led to a human study in which I3C again significantly inhibited the formation of these lesions—this time in children. There is preliminary evidence from in vitro studies that I3C-induced metabolites can inhibit oxidation of LDL-cholesterol and that they can also inhibit smooth muscle cell proliferation. " Inhibit smooth muscle cell proliferation!! No wonder there is such strong anecdotal evidence for it shrinking cancers. I urge everyone to read the full link to see all they have to say about Indole 3 Carbinol. They gave no safety concerns other than to nursing and pregnant women and a mention of a few drug interactions. They also said people with cancer should consult a physician before using it. I hope you all find this useful.
