Sorry guys....I should have posted this story first...this is part 1

of the 2 part story on focused ultrasound:

Breaking the ultrasound barrier

By Vered Levy-Barzilai

Sheba Medical Center is promoting an innovative method of removing

benign uterine growths without surgery. The method has won praise, but

experts in Israel and abroad say its effectiveness has not yet been

proved. And the hospital turns out to be a business partner of

InSightec, the firm that invented the procedure.

It started three weeks ago, in Odetta Schwartz's column in the daily

Ma'ariv. The headline was promising: " How to avoid hysterectomy (!!!)

because of myomas " (exclamation points in the original). The article

described an innovative method for removing benign growths in the

uterus (myomas) which was being implemented at Sheba Medical Center,

Tel Hashomer. The procedure involves the use of ultrasound and does

not require intrusive surgical penetration; it is painless and there

are no side-effects. Under the impact of the heat produced by the

instrument, the myoma is annihilated and disappears.
