Also, my gyn gives you a flimsy paper gown to put on top and it only covers to the top of the waist. What is that about? He gives you a drape thing which is not that big either. Several times, I've wrapped my sweater around myself too because I'm freezing. What's the deal? I like the bring your own cover thing. I'm remembering that for my next check up. Thanks. Ok..I know this is probably the LEAST of our worries, BUT: Have you ever gone into your gyno's exam room (who hasn't?) and been given something the size of a washcloth with which you're supposed to (HA!) " cover " yourself??? Have you ever pondered how nice it would be if your doctor were to show some sensitivity to the *woman* (and not just the *body*) on his table by providing a drape that gave at least the " illusion " of modesty? I'm certain that most doctors are so used to having naked women splayed out on their tables all day that they don't give a second thought to how demeaning (and unnecessary) this practic is. I'm certain, too, that were doctors to realize what a tremendous impact the small gesture of providing a larger drape would have on a woman's comfort level and on her perception of the level of care she had received in his office, they would change this practice immediately! (That would be a very interesting experiment, btw: Provide some women with ample (but still practical) drapes and others with the usual scraps of sheets or paper- then survey each group as to their satifaction with the care they had received. We all know what the results would show). Until the docs see the light, though (in addition to all the other things they see!) I'm bringing my own " drape " ! Nothing so large that it will annoy the doctor or get in the way, but something large enough to make me feel more comfortable (and warmer- those rooms can be freezing!) I was going to cut up one of my old flannel sheets, but I was at Albertson's last night and saw polar fleece " throws " on sale, 2 for $10. There were some cute patterns. I really liked the kitty-cat one, but passed on it for obvious reasons I picked up a cozy green and white plaid instead. They are 50 " x60 " which after some experiments at home seems to be an ideal size. Maybe if we all start bringing our own, things will change. Anyone care to join me in this grass-roots movement? (Btw, I wonder when the " washcloth-drape " became standard practice. I remember seeing photos in old medical texts of women, fully clothed and standing upright with their long skirts to the floor, being examined by a doctor who simply put his hand up her skirt and felt. I remember the caption saying that the doctor should look into the woman's eyes so that she would know he wasn't looking " elsewhere " . I'm not advocating a return to n times by any means, but **certainly** there has to be a middle ground between this and " the washcloth " !) Thinking back, I have never had a gynecological exam outside the US, and the drapes have *always* been skimpy. Is this a small issue? I think not! While probably unconscious on the part of the individual physician, this practice serves to reinforce the already-prevalent feelings in our society and imparts an unmistakable subliminal message to the patient. That message? (The woman is weak and subservient, the Doctor is all-powerful! The woman is weak and subservient, the Doctor is all-powerful! So again, my American sister " fibragettes " , I say to you, join me and " BYOD " (bring your own drape!) " and this was the meaning to your email. The price of the throws are great, not only for the drapes, but I have 5 kids and it would be great to get each of them one, BUT.... Albertsons is one of the stores that are picketing.... and my sister in law worked for Vons and is out there picketing every day, so I have to support her. I can't remember when I last had a pelvic exam with a drape, over here in Europe they don't seem to worry about preserving modesty, you just hop up without your panties on!
