Cutting through ABDOMINAL MUSCLE during MYO

Hi, Ladies-

As my surgeon explained to me, it is possible to either cut *through* the

abdominal muscle when doing a myo (w/bikini cut) or to kind of work " around " the

muscle by moving it aside while removing the fibroids.

If I understood him correctly, he feels that because of my large fibroid (12

cm) it is faster and easier (and thus safer) to just go ahead and cut

*through* the muscle. Thus, that is the procedure that he uses.

While I know that he is a great surgeon, that thought troubles me a little.

Not that I have any muscle tone *now*, you understand :) but I still have

fantasies of someday exercising and having a nice flat tummy (once that tummy is

fibroid-fruit-free!!)

I would greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts on this, and input from

anyone who has had a myo w/muscles cut. Do you think the recovery was any

tougher? Did you notice any reduction in muscle tone post myo???

Thanks!!

Elana,

I had my myo 3 weeks ago (bikini-cut) and I also had a very large

fibroid 11cm and 4 smaller fibroids (5 cm) but my doctor (Dr. West)

informed me there is no reason to cut the muscle and it is not

neccessary regardless of the size of the fibroid...I'm sure all

doctors will have different opinions but as an athlete, my stomach

muscles were very important to me and he reassured me that my

muscles would not be cut.

Regarding the differences with recovery, I'm not really sure but I'm

sure someone within the group can address your concern.

All the best,
