Guest guest
carol I just had a Hysteroscopy a few days ago and sorry I did. I had it done at Cornell University, NY. I trusted my doctor and may not have asked important questions which is my fault. I am 44 single and no children and suffering with fibroids since 5/98. I was diagnosed after suffering with sever lower back pain. My Orthopedic doctor told me to go to my Gyn (I thought he was nuts I was having back and sciatica pain). My doctor wants to perform a partial hysterectomy which I am dead against, so when he suggested the Hysteroscopy I said yes. It has only been a few days and maybe I will feel differently in the future. Before the surgery I had very heavy bleeding (many accidents) and 2 severe sciatica flare ups which my Gyn said has no relationship to my fibroids, but my Orthopedic doctor disagrees. After the surgery the nurse at Cornell said if I have heavy bleeding call my doctor. I stayed home Fri and went out on Sat & Sun for a bit. When I went back to work on Monday the bleeding started heavy. I called my doctor's office and the nurse told me what are you doing at work you should be home and they called in a prescription for me and also said maybe the doctor will have to do the procedure again. My doctor never told me how many days to stay home. I am very upset and going to the hospital was a traumatic experience for me. I am expecting my period on Feb 11 and I am scared. since I am bleeding now. If you have the Hysteroscopy, maybe go for a second opinion and ask lots of questions, especially how you will feel and what to expect after the surgery. Good luck. Guest guest
A test just confirmed that I have submucosal fibroids that are probably the cause of my excessive bleeding and I expect my dr to rec a hysteroscopic myomectomy. Does anyone have any advice based on their experiences with this? I have many questions. One dr said she could do it with IV sedation, another says only with general. Has anyone had it with IV sedation and how did it work out? (Mine is only 1.7 cent, pretty small). Does anyone know who is supposed to be the best MD for this and/or best hospital? Has anyone had complications with this? Any advice you wish you had known beforehand? Also, has anyone had this done at UCSF and how did it go? I have become afraid to have surgery there - when I had an apointment for a saline sonohysterogram there to look at my fibroids last week, the doctor told me I did not need to premedicate (which I do for a heart mumer with procedures that risk infection), the radiology lad did not mention it when the dr and I first made the apt, the lab did not mention it when I called to confirm the apt, and the technician did not ask if I needed to premedicate when I got there either. After I had been there an hour, the radiologist herself came in and told me I had to reschedule because I needed to premedicate. When I went back for the procedure, it took the radiologist 50 minutes to locate my cervix (I am not exagerating). I told her the ob-gyns find it each year for my annual exam. While she was out of the room PAGING the ob-gyn for help (to find my cervix) the Medical Fellow( a physician there for advanced training - more experienced than a medical resident) was holding the speculum and sneezed. She made no move to clean it or replace it until I asked. Later I realized, she did not reglove and subsequently handled more medical equipmant that went inside me. I have been concerned and worried about all this. I am not a medical professional so I figure if I was aware of this many mistakes there were probably many more I was not aware of. Anyway, I hope someone has some info to offer and that my experience helps someone else. I don't want to keep bleeding profusely because I am afraid of the hospital but I don't know if this experience at UCSF is any worse than a private hospital. Thank you, Carol
Guest guest
Holy Cow Carol, What a nightmare, a classic example of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing! I would be really nervous too. I am a medical professinal, and what you are describing is unacceptable. Keep your eyes open, ask questions and don't nod and say ok if you don't understand, or disagree. Keep asking! We are consumers for crying out loud. ANd not stupid just because we don't understand the new language. Sue Wolcott, RN Mt. Shasta, CA
