Guest guest
Hi Ann I found this very interesting. I was diagnosed with a small fibroid about 1cm during a lap for endo and uterus repair, in June last year. After my surgery, my gynie put me on 3 x 10mg medroxyprogesterone a day to control the endo. After one week, I noticed a pain in my lower right side, at that time it was just a niggle and wasnt always there. Within a month it had increased to very sharp intense pain, that stabbed about 3 times a day. After the 6th week, I started a pain diary and realised that the pain was coming within half an hour of taking my tablet. I went to the gynie and told him what was happening and that I thought the tablets were causing this pain. He laughed me off, saying it wasnt possible. After the second month, I couldnt take the pain anymore, it was 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and pushed my GP to give me an US. This is when I was told that my fibroid was now 4.5cm x 2.5cm, and pulling my repaired uterus over. I went back and told the doc what was found, and still was told that this wasnt the cause of my pain. I decided to stop taking the tablets because I was convinced there was a link. Within 3 weeks, the pain decreased by 25%. Now 8 weeks later, the pain is niggling all the time, and only intense when I have done alot of walking or standing for long periods. I am a hundred percent sure that the medroxyprogesterone is the culprit, and as I havent had another US done since the end of October I am unsure how big the fibroid is now. I might just pass the link onto my gynie and ask him to read it, as I found it fascinating to say the least. Thanks for the info. Guest guest
Suzi, Your doc may well dismiss the information, claiming that info from the internet can't be trusted. I do believe that I've posed some valid questions though regarding the possible influence of estrone versus progesterone in the luteal phase contributing to fibroid growth. They haven't done enough research yet in my mind, not enough to be conclusive or to take into account the different life stages we are in and differences between our hormonal situations. I had two women write back to me about this post (you are the 3rd) -- one told me that progesterone has helped her tremendously, another told me of how using a phytoestrogen gel rapidly grew her fibroid. I have yet to meet anyone whose fibroid grew using progesterone but that doesn't mean it can't. [ladies please write back if you have had growth that you believed is linked to progesterone] Also, consider the fact the progesterone primes the estrogen receptors -- that might be why RU-486 works. So, does RU-486 block progesterone from doing what it does, or does it block progesterone from helping estrogen do what it does. Chicken or egg -- they don't know. --Ann > I might just pass the link onto my gynie and ask him to read it, as > I found it fascinating to say the least. Guest guest
Hi Ann.. I wrote to Eisinger (who conducted the Mifepristone study in Rochester) about this His reply was theoretically Aygestin could cause fibroid growth, but if it was helping to control bleeding I should stay on it. I have been on continuous Aygestin for 3 months and today at a check-up my gyn said that my uterus was a bit smaller 10 weeks vs 12 weeks 7 months ago. That doesn't mean that the fibroids are smaller...but probably they haven't grown diane Re: Progesterone and Fibroid Growth Info I had two women write back to me about this post (you are the 3rd) -- one told me that progesterone has helped her tremendously, another told me of how using a phytoestrogen gel rapidly grew her fibroid. Guest guest
Ann, I read a book all about perimenapause - " What your Doc may not tell you about perimenapause " By Dr. Lee. Facinating information on the estrogen dominance that happens to us as we age. (lack of regular ovulation therefore less and less progesterone) Anyway, to make a long story short, he said to use this natural progesterone cream to balance the estrogen. I did do this when I found out I had a fibroid. He even said it could help shrink fibroids!! I tried it along with his diet & nutrition stuff. Unfortunately my fibroid did grow a lot bigger and now I am having a UFE this week. I stopped the cream when I had my 1st frightening episode with hemmoraging and gushing. I was disapointed that the cream did not help me. I felt the book made so much sense and tried his things but I guess it didn't work with me. Guest guest
I have posted many many times that I feel my fibroid grew from progesterone use. Guest guest
Just yesterday, my Doc gave me a script for Provera. It is pinned to my cork board. I doubt very much if I will have it filled. My bleed ing is scant to mod, I cant tell if it is a period, or just bleeding. But, my Hbg is 12.5 today, up from 10 two days ago. Hurray for red wine and one/a/day with iron. Sue Wolcott, RN Mt. Shatsa, CA
