I believe it is recommended for babies six months old and up. They

do give it to pregnant women who are in a certain trimester (2nd?)

during the flu season. The thing is, there is the reduced thimerosal

version available and it is SUPPOSED to be prioritized for pregnant

women and six month old babies BUT good grief who is monitoring

this?? No one. I mean, that vaccine was to be special ordered and

if you were to randomly call some offices I'm sure you could find a

place that is clueless about this. The thing is, the name of it is

very close to the name of the full-thimerosal version, which is given

to toddlers and older children (12.5 micrograms of mercury per dose,

the first time they get a flu shot, they actually need two doses so

they get it twice. Adult flu shots ALL contain 25 micrograms of

mercury, although an adult can request the reduced-thimerosal kids

version (which has one to three micrograms in it, per shot)--they

just need two shots to equal the full dose). Anyhow, the name is so

close that it is confusing for people.

If your friend has made up her mind... I wouldn't talk to her about

it anymore. You could always print off information and send it to

her and let her choose whether or not to read it. It sounds like she

has made up her mind to vaccinate and so at this point, just making

sure she has a list of the thimerosal free versions that are

available, and some ideas like skipping the hepB series altogether,

etc. Again, if she chooses to read it, great, but if not, you

tried. When that book comes out soon by Kirby (?) about the

history of the vaccines and thimerosal and autism, read the book and

then hand it to her to read. If she chooses to remain ignorant,

that's her bed she's made, and she'll have to lie in it. :-{

My local news said they were mandated for children 2 months and

older. By my estimation 2 months is right after birth.

To me, right after birth means within a few hours or so--such as the

HepB vaccine given within a few hours or a few days after birth.

Maybe you should write to your local news and tell them that they

need to investigate why they would recommend them for babies 2 months

old when apparently no flu vaccines are licensed for children under

age 6 months, according to this one article...
