" ) I'd start by saying they truly arn't a typical problem folks with chiari experience ...but are more common in those with complex problems that chairi is a PART off . ...one thing that happens with the list is that those folks with the most severe problems often stick around ...while the majority of folks find us ..get to good care ..get better and leave resuming their normal lives . Chiari comes in a wide variety of severity with differing problems that cause it . The most common " variety " is a small posterior fossa leading to chiari 1 ..and these folks usually do very well without much lingering impact if they are in serious enough " shape " to need surgery AND see a neurosurgeon with great experience in evaluating /treating chiari . When someone has a complex situation with mulitple problems including chairi ...seisures are found more often too ..but medications may well improve things for these folks . About 85 % of folks with chiari have sleep disturbance problems found on study too ( according to some recent studies published ) ..and the impacts of sleep disturbance can seem like seisure activity of the sorts some have been discribing on the list too ...so sleep study may be appropriate for anyone finding themselves " spaced " out or nodding off ect . I think its a first good step on the road to finding out whats up beyond neurosurgical consultation myself . There are treatment options that can improve things lots if sleep problems are found . These can include sleep apnea of a couple different sorts ..restless leg syndrome ...pain interupting sleep ..it's not at all untreatable though /and if problems are found there are often great options to improve things . Folks who wake with a morning headache are often found to have apnea ..it's a clue to ask for sleep studys . I hope that helps answer your question ...do post them as they come to mind ( and don't feel like any are silly ..they arn't . ) Thats only my opinion on it too ...there are some study abstracts on possible ties to seisures but its not a common symtpom or complecation found in most of us . I do know of at least one pediatric member that was diagnosed with seizures prior to surgery and the seizure activity went away post op. There isn't significant research to show that seizures are related to chiari in chiari patients though. We can have more than one illness going on, and it is difficult to say what the cause of seizures are in patients with chiari. I believe I have seen some studies about this at the PubMed Site. You might want to check that out. I was one of the " seizure people " ... In fact, in my case, it was finally having a big time seizure that led Drs away from their working diagnosis of " severe sinus impaction " ..aarrgghhhhh...to ACM. However, I also have hydro as a complication, so I de believe that this is quite probably what caused the actual seizures. I may be wrong. This is the old Catch 22 with the whole chiari thing...there are so many potential overlaps... Best wishes, Sally R ACM..Decompression '91...
