Guest guest Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 Hello all, On Thursday, I finally got in contact with the people that do the Intake interview at my surgeon's office. I am on the list of people waiting for surgery. The list is 2 years long. So it does not look like I am going to be having my surgery anytime soon. I guess I will just keep trying to lose weight with Weight Watchers, until then. It was kind of a blow to my thinking, I was getting excited to be working on my new body. I still love myself, I just have to wait 2 years for my surgery. I do not know what this means for my REFLUX problem. I am on medication for it twice a day. Just thought I would stop on by and update you all on my situation. I will still be here to CHEER everyone else on. I know you will all be there to CHEER me on when it is my turn. Happy NEW YEAR Bethany Quote
Guest guest Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 Hi Bethany, Welcome to our group. Can I ask where you are? Are you here in the United States? Or are you Kaiser? If so, could you switch to another surgeon? Did they say why the wait would be 2 years? Take Care, in CA Quote
Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Bethany, can you go to another surgeon? Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 I'm with on this one, Bethany. It might mean that you have to travel a distance, but isn't it worth eliminating 2 years of a condition that compromises your health and longevity? That's a fair trade-off. Two years is unnecessarily excessive, IMHO. --Cat > > > > Hello all, On Thursday, I finally got in contact with the people > that > > do the Intake interview at my surgeon's office. Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 I found out it would take me 2 years to qualify with our insurance and I feel like my life is too important to wait and or waist 2 years of my life. I decided to check out alternatives, I started doing research on doctors and then ended up checking out some in Mexico, two came to the top very quickly. One was Dr Alberto Aceves, I drove his assistant Nina crazy for a couple of months, but she doesn't mind and I later found out that everybody does it to her in the let me check this out stage. She provided me a list of prior gastric by pass patients with their emails. When I contacted them they were all positive and healthy and they offered me more patients names, plus how they decided to use Dr A. They even offered me their phone numbers to talk and ask any questions I needed. So I'm schedule for the 10th of Jan. Have you considered self pay and going to Mexico. I'm going to Dr Alberto Aceves, in Mexicalli, Mexico. I fly into San Diego and a driver picks me and my husband up, then takes us to the hospital where we do all my pre op testing, then takes us back to a hotel, which was part of the price of surgery. The next morning I report to the hospital and have my surgery. Then hang for 6 days if all is good, if not I stay longer. He also does the yuck thing to check for leaks etc. The cost is $12,500 and he has some finance plans. my reg email is karenostrom@... feel free to email me if you like and I will pass along his web site and other info I have gathered. Mexicalli is just under Yuma AZ, and if you are close you can even drive there, but since I live in North FL not possible for me so we are flying. Dr A is even on a Bariac Board in AZ. He also has a lap band group, that is very yappy and friendly and several past by pass patients belong to it, and of course I do too. So feel free to email me and look at this alternative if you feel it is something to consider. Quote
Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Wow! 2 years is a long time! I wish it could be sooner for you. I know that is such a let down after coming this far. Maybe it will be sooner! :-) W 380/254/160 nttr_b wrote: > Hello all, On Thursday, I finally got in contact with the people that > do the Intake interview at my surgeon's office. Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Bethany, I would get the phonebook down, call around find a surgeon that you were comfortable with and follow up with them. 2 years is a long time to suffer. Most surgeons have a list of people whom they did wls on for newcomers to call and find out about the surgery and the surgeon. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Best of luck. > > > > Hello all, On Thursday, I finally got in contact with the people > that > > do the Intake interview at my surgeon's office. I am on the list > of > > people waiting for surgery. Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 I think that Sherry is definitely correct here. It definitely seems like that is too long of a time to have to wait on the surgery especially considering that you are dealing with a acid reflux issue as well. Lin 422-338-250 Lhsh@... Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Bethany...I agree with what others have said about the delay in having to wait 2 years for WLS. Sheeesh! You may be able to " short- cut " your calling around by calling hospitals in your area and speaking to someone in the patient education area. I live in MN and the hospitals here are all " advertising " their programs, informational sessions, etc. ly, they want the business and often are partnering with surgical groups/surgeons to " increase revenue " . Also, don't hesitate to ask the surgeon's office that told you " 2 year wait " for other surgeons in the area. I wasn't 100% sure that I wanted the " top " bariatric surgeon working on me after I went to his information session based on his attitude (talked down to the group like school children). I opted to move forward - complete the psyche and nutritional assessment and then see him 1:1. I was honest with him about what I needed/expected from him in how he treated me. He offered to refer me to 3 other well-known bariatric surgeons all connected with the University of MN but he also changed his tone & demeanor on the spot. End of the story - he did my surgery 8 weeks later. There's also a national accrediting body that endorses bariatric surgery programs for 3 year periods. I don't have the web-site handy but if I can come up with it, I will post it. They would be an exellent resource for surgeons in your area. Heartfelt thoughts zinging your way!!! - Diann Quote
Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 To everyone that is concerned, there are alot of you. This is my situation. I am on Medical Coupons in Washington State and my surgeon is at the University of Washington. He is in such high demand that that waiting list for Gastric Bypass is 2 years long. AT LEAST I AM ON THE LIST. I personally would not have it done by anybody that is not part of the University of Washington. They are the Best. But to have the best you have to wait. I have done my research and their mortality rate is 2%. I have met the Surgeon, he did my endoscopy for my reflux problem. He was the one that mentioned Gastric Bypass. I do not know what else I can do but wait for my turn on the list. I live in Olympia, WA. I have Basic Health, which does not cover the surgery, but I also have my Medical Coupon from DSHS. It will cover the surgery. My doctor and surgeon just have to petition DSHS to cover the procedure. Right now I feel under the weather, with what I think is either constipation or the stomach flu. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE ON THEIR RESPONSES. Bethany Quote
Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Bethany, Good luck with this, if you really feel that you need this surgeon then you should wait.....You should only do what is right for you. Guest guest Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Bethany, Since the doctor that treated you for the reflux is the surgeon for GBS, could you talk to him and ask him if he could get you a sooner date, since you have the reflux problem maybe he would do that for you. My motto has always been : It doesn't hurt to ask- all they can do is say No! in CA Quote
Guest guest Posted December 31, 2006 Report Posted December 31, 2006 Bethany, continue posting and letting us know where you are on the journey. You have two years to research things. You can take this time to try protien powders/shakes/liquids. Use this time to start a savings account for new clothes, plastic surgery (if needed/wanted), vitamins, protien supplements, etc... I wish you could have it sooner, but at least you are getting it. This is the time to prepare for your new life. lisamathis > > To everyone that is concerned, > > there are alot of you. > > This is my situation. > > I am on Medical Coupons in Washington State and my surgeon is at the > University of Washington.
