Guest guest Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 That is so sad. Has she had any hormones tested? You can order your own saliva test from www.healthcheck.com for a starting point. She also should have her thyroid levels tested in a thorough manner with Free T3 and Free T4 as well as thyroid antibodies, I believe that is healthcheck as well. Guest guest Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 She sounds similar to me when I was her age. And now I worry about my daughter. I was put on BC pills at 17 for the same reason. But they never stopped my periods like they did in your daughter. They were a blessing to me. It was the first time that I functioned near my period. I would definitely ask someone - even they gyny, to run those thyroid tests mentioned. I had endometriosis, and a lot of other problems, that now, I read, could have been thyroid related - plus estrogen dominance related. If her gyny won't run them, try those places suggested to have them done yourself. Good luck!! and let us know how things go. Cris Re: menopausal daughter at 24???? Whoops I sent this to wrong list! Guest guest Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 I went on the pill around the same age. I was having a very hard time functioning, very heavy bleeding and cramping. My periods never stopped, they were just better. It took me about a year to become pregnant. I am back on the pill but a lower dose. I think she need to have her thyroid tested. I don't think the bc pills were the problem, they were " hiding " another problem. Kate G At 02:39 PM 1/9/2005, you wrote: >She sounds similar to me when I was her age. Guest guest Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 , I don't think that HealthCheck does the saliva testing, but does do blood testing for the female hormones (and male ones). They do the testing for the Free T3, Free T4, and the TSH together in one package deal, though. ZRT Labs does do the saliva testing. Re: menopausal daughter at 24???? > > That is so sad. I think that it's thyroid, IMO. I had (have?) endometriosis. So does my sister. Both of us have had hysterectomies. She had one child, and I gave birth to 4 children. Mine didn't advance as far as hers did, but I had all my children between the age of 18 to 27. She postponed children and had one child in her mid thirties, so, according to the research on this sbjct, that may be why my case didn't advance as far or wasn't as painful as hers was. She still has material around her intestines in one place that the doctor couldn't get to. I strongly suspect I may have some around the bladder and intestines that was never explored. I'm making these comparisons because I strongly suspect that my sister has Hashimoto's Disease. http://www.thyroid-info.com/articles/endometriosis.htm http://www.infertilityphysician.com/endometriosis/heredity.html Quote
Guest guest Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Estrogen Dominance is always going to be a problem for the thyroid. I was on BC pills for almost 10 yrs before a tubil, then those nonstop periods were next, then a hyst. It took me 6 more yrs to find out that it was all thyroid disease and that I had also been in estrogen dominance, making no progesterone, and had added to the estrogen I was already making out the kazoo, by taking the pill, plus later on HRT with estrogen-only. I think that it all has to do with thyroid disease, or in making the history of it. Re: menopausal daughter at 24???? > > I went on the pill around the same age. Guest guest Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 I have had very difficult periods all my life. When I was younger the minute I would start my period (even if in the middle of the night) I would start vomiting. Then I would get so cold that I would turn on the oven and sit in front of it with my feet in it. My poor Dad would get up and his eyes would well up wih tears... he felt so bad because there was nothing he could do. When I was about 30 I started birth control pills. It helped with the periods. Then I developed cysts.. on my ovaries, my tubes and just about everyplace inbetween (I had a laparscope done and that's what told them) doc switched B/C pill and I was o.k. for awhile. Keep in mind that all this time I was well over 200 pounds. As I get older things sure don't seem to get better. I truly believe that I've been hype since I was a teenager... probably since puberty.... oh, and at age 14 I had a period that went on for 3 months non stop. Mom took me to an endocrinologist who wanted to put me on birth control pills.... mom said NO. Back then they were very high dosage. Even she mentioned thyroid, but my numbers always came back o.k. My Mom had thyroid problems, weight problems and period problems, so she understood what I was going through. The docs didn't listen to her either... you see... when you're that overweight they blame everything on your weight. Heck, they're even blaming my fibromyalgia on my weight to a degree. Today is a bad day. I'm seriously depressed (haven''t seen the sun in over a week, even though I've been tanning). I'm also in a fibro flare... my exhaustion level is unbelievable. I'm fighting just to stay awake. I'm in pain, and it's real. I don't even know what prompted this, perhaps a pity party I'm having for myself.... I just can't imagine your daughter giong through all she is at age 24. Do what ever possible to get her the BEST help... if not, it will only get worse. I live in Rhode Island and I'm seriously thinking about trying to get into the Lahey Clinic in Massachusetts to see if they can find out what is wrong. If not you might as well start sending flowers because I don't know how long I can go on like this. By that I mean... not having definite answers to questions. Sorry for my diatribe, I'm just feeling really bad. Tigger Re: menopausal daughter at 24???? > > I went on the pill around the same age. Guest guest Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 Tigger, you are the only other person I have ever heard of who used to vomit at the start of a period. I did too, I always used to start in the middle of the night and would vomit for 24 hours, dry heaving when I had nothing else to bring up. Stupid, stupid doc told my mother that it was a psychological reflex action. How on earth could it be when I was so irregular that I didn't know it was going to start and I would start vomiting BEFORE I knew that it had come. Looking back now, I am sure that I had a huge dump of hormones and that is what caused it. Guest guest Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 I got sick with my very first period - and the only time i WASN'T was when I was on BC pills - and yes, they were back in early 1970's and strong. My dr. when I was a teenager just blew it off - acted like I was making it up or something. I would go to the nurse in school, and she'd take my temp and say it was normal, I couldn't be sick. what a piece of work! now, my daughter is getting worse and worse each time. She started off with very little pain. We came home 2 years ago from my sisters and we were at my mom's - she just cried and wanted to drive the 2 hours further to get home - it was late I just drove 12 hours - she sat in the bathroom puking. I suppose I should take her to a gyny at this point. but I've asked , and they claim there isn't any more they can do for girls now than when i was a girl! isn't that discusting? They say it's the pain level that causes the nausea.... well, whatever it is, we shouldn't have to go through it once/month!! Cris Re: menopausal daughter at 24???? Guest guest Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 Cris, has your daughter had any kind of a work up for endometriosis? Pain like this just isn't normal. Take her to someone who thinks there is something you can do. Most doctors dismiss hypo also, that doesn't mean there isn't anything that can be done, it just means the doctor is ignorant and/or doesn't care. Guest guest Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 Cris, With me, I don't think it was the pain that caused it. I had pain but it wasn't unbearable. The point is that I would start vomiting before the flow started so it must have been something hormonal. I remember once when we were on a family holiday, I was 14 and was sitting in a restaurant with my parents. My period had started and I had already been vomiting before we left the place where we were staying. Anyway, I said I had to go outside as I felt so uncomfortable. I sat on a wall for awhile and then my mother came out to see if I was ok. She told me that my Dad was getting annoyed with the way I was acting and it was something that was going to happen to me for the next 40 years so I should just " get used to it " I've never forgotton that because it just seemed so unfair, I think even they thought I was putting it on. Guest guest Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 I'm like you Lynda. Except I could actually feel mine starting because of the very low cramps and then I would star vomiting. I was lucky... my Dad alway felt bad and hated seeing me like that. But he also knew what a hard time my Mother had. There were times I remember when she was in bed and I could hear her say to my Dad... " Get some towels, now! " That meant she went through everything. Too bad we always inherit the bad stuff and not the good stuff. lol Tigger Re: menopausal daughter at 24???? Guest guest Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 The woman pediatrician said she can take over the counter alieve. I called once for the note for her to take them at school, and the man pediatrician was refusing to give me the paper! He said, that is only for severe pain, I can't imagine she has pain that bad. I would have slapped him if I was with him. He is an arogant sob - and I know that from past history. I said, yes, she is in that bad of pain, and the other dr. wrote the paper for her last year, and I would be there to pick it up. grrrrr !!! but my daughter also won't make a big deal out of it. She's like me at that age - figures it's a cross to bear, I guess. But - by the time I was her age, or close to it, my mom had taken me to the gyny - that's when I got the bc pills - my mom had a big hissy fit! and I wasn't even dating anyone!!! Guest guest Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 I didn't agree either that it was the pain that caused it. It is definitely hormonal - and you'd think someone would realize more than just a few women get this - and they would do something about it. I had my first laparoscopy and surgical removal of endometriosis at about 21. I don't want to see my daughter going down that path. I've been wondering if progesterone cream would help her - I need to check with the gyny and have blood levels drawn etc. Cris Re: menopausal daughter at 24???? Guest guest Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 You should have slapped him. First, I quit going to male doctors for female problems. I'd had it with that " it's all in your head routine a long time ago " . As a matter of fact, most of my doctors are women. Men cannot begin to understand the kind of pain that our hormones cause us because they've never experienced it. Go back and slap him for me, will ya! I feel so bad for your daughter. I had no idea at that age either. I had to learn the hard way... too many doctors and wrong diagnoses... hmmm, seems I'm still there. Give her a hug for me. Tigger Re: menopausal daughter at 24???? Guest guest Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 Cris, there is a yahoo support group called Endonatural. Many of the women on that board use progesterone cream, and by their posts are younger women. They might have some helpful info for you. Many of them treat their endo all naturally through diet, liver support to get rid of the extra estrogens and progesterone. There is a website called Endo 101 that has good info also.
