We have the s and they are not as easy to put on as you might think.

It still takes 2 people to do it because Kaitlin wiggles and rolls so much.

It can actually be more difficult in my opinion because there are 3 separate

straps on each shoe that cannot be put into the buckles until after the foot is

in the shoe.

I would not recommend the s if the only reason you are getting them

is to make putting the shoes on easier. I actually found the s to be

more difficult to put on at first and like I said it still takes 2 of us to do

it.

hmmmm.. when I talked to I didn't tell him Sammy's

age. I will have to call back and make sure he has a bar that's big

enough. Sammy's feet are small, though, due to CF. He is 16 months

and can still wear a size 3 baby shoe. If we do stick with the

Markells I will definitely try the knots. Sammy is just so wiggly

that he alsways pulls out before I get them on. I can barely even

change his diaper anymore because he flips and flops around!

I'll have to say it took us AT LEAST 20 minutes to get the bar on in

the beginning and that was when he was only 10 weeks old. But now we

can do it in under two! He was so strong, it was 20-30 minutes and

that was with two people! Weeks later he just finally accepted it.

I remember I couldn't believe the first time I did it alone. It was

really hard in the beginning because my husband works 24 hour shifts

so anytime I had to readjust the brace or take it off and put it back

on for some reason I had to go to someone else's house for their help

in holding him. Ohhh, the good oh days! Joking the good ole days

are on in under two minutes! It will get better!

I had a really hard time with Zoe pulling her foot out before I could

tighten it until I did the Kori trick with pushing on the top of her

foot with my thumb once the foot was down and until I had the strap

done and laces tight. She is getting so much more fidgety though.

Shauna,

My 11 mo. old son is wearing his 2nd pair of shoes and there are others

on this board who use them also. Perhaps you could search the archives for our

messages pertaining to the shoes and for Mr. 's web address.

In a nut shell, I think the shoes are great, pricey, but great. If you have any

specific questions you may ask and I'll try to answer best i can based on my

experience with them.

Good luck,

s.

Shoes

Hi -

I wrote a few weeks ago because my 16 month old son had been released

from the DBB at 10 months of age and now his clubfoot is recurring.

We saw one of Dr. Ponseti's specialists in Cincinnati and she agrees

that he must go back in the brace, and gave us a website of a new

shoe that Dr. Ponseti has approved for the DBB. It is made by a man

who works with Dr. Ponseti named . It is a sandal with

open toes and heels and looks like it would be A LOT EASIER to get on

than the current Markell laced shoes. Has anyone tried the new shoe,

and if so, how is it? I am thinking of ordering it because my son

just will not sit still to let me lace up his DBB shoes. It is a lot

more expensive ($350.00) but I am wondering if it might be worth it?

Thanks,

Shauna

I remember a day early on trying to apply the Markell's to Everett. I ws home

alone so i had him in his swing where his feet would hang out thinking maybe

that would help. He was screaming so hard and I had been struggling with him

for so long that day, various postions to put the shoes on ya know - finally at

the swing, I'm on the floor trying to get them on, he's ballistic and there

comes the little 10 year old neighbor girl to my screen door, " Uuhhh? Are you

OK? " I was crying too and she came in asking if she cuold help. It sucked.

Long story short I totally understand your frustration at putting those on.

Some parents here, even a lot of parents here, talk about how easy they are, but

I never did figure it out. The shoes took me a couple three days to

get comfortable with them, but I've never looked back.

Re: Shoes

no, that wasn't me that took the FAB off for personal reasons. We

took it off because our ortho surgeon said he didn't need it

anymore. We did get second opinion from a doctor trained by Dr.

Ponseti. She said the correction is still good, it's just the

forefoot that is turning in and therefore the FAB will definitely

work.

As for the shoes, it takes me 20 minutes to put on the

Markells because of kicking and squirming, no matter what position we

use. I think I will try the s.

Wow Jen, really???? It's so weird reading this stuff, isn't it? I mean we're

dealing with the same thing here and I see it so differently! haha. I set

Everett on my lap, both of us facing the same direction. I put on the left shoe

then the right shoe - no logic there, just my system I guess. It only takes me

a short moment to get them on, even if he is tired and fussy (i.e. kicking and

screaming at me). Hm, I wonder what it is we're doing so differently or

something.

I'm sorry you're having this much trouble with them.
