Guest guest Posted August 4, 2004 Report Share Posted August 4, 2004 I am a single mom who flys from Alaska to Nebraska then drive from there to Iowa City. I do it this way for two reasons one I get to spend one night with my family and 2nd so that I can get a beeter price on plane ticket, it also eliminates one extra flight but adds a long car ride (but my son loves car rides) Being able to walk into the RMH is the best thing for me I can make a home cooked meal and not have to eat out I can put my son in the play room and let him get rid of all the built of engery from the drive, and as for the cleaning when I wake up in the morning I pull the sheats off put the extra set on, then thow the dirty ones in the wash with my towels from my shower and then I cook breakfast do my dishes and put the sheets and stuff from the washer to the dryer then I go to my sons appt. when I am done I go back grab the sheets from the dryer and flod them put them away and clean the bathroom and head out for NE then I get on the plane and come. But I got a good night sleep was son was in a place that I felt safe. I think that the RMH is a great place for people who have to travel and need a " home " . Re: Mc House It is definately a matter of choice as to whether or not it's worth the " extra work " (you didn't even mention the chores you may have assigned at the RMH). We still stay there for just one appointment because we stay two nights (at least!). We drive through the night to get there and to get home, so for the one-visit trips we still stay overnight on both sides of the appointment. With a 20+ hour drive on each side it's nice to get a full night's sleep and some extra " down time " and to have a " home away from home " . We make a point of living minimally when there, like making no dishes and all sleeping in the same bed. But, it is sort of a drag when you know you have a long drive ahead of you but first you have to change the sheets, clean the bathtub, vaccum the floor, etc. before you can hit the road. Because we leave in the evening towards the baby's bedtime, it's nice to have stayed at the RMH because most hotels won't let you check out late afternoon/early evening. So far there hasn't been anyone waiting for our room so we feel relaxed about hanging around the RMH on the day we're leaving. If they had people wait-listed I'm sure we'd get out to free up the room. It could also be worth the stay if you were flying in because they provide so many things you can't take on a plane, like bouncy-seats, high chairs, etc. We had a blast carting Devlin around in a little red wagon the last time we were there---that's something we wouldn't have brought with us, even in the car! Another thing that was wonderful when were were there the first two times is we made friends with a mother/daughter combination staying there and they LOVED to watch Devlin. On our first visit, I think Rick and I got to eat a meal--together---with 2 utensils for the first time since the baby was born! We don't have much by the way of babysitting support around here so it was a real treat. But, these types of relationships probably don't form during an overnight visit. So, it has its pros and cons. If we had never stayed for so long the first time (2 weeks) we probably wouldn't feel like it was a " home " and we'd be more comfortable in a hotel. It is a trade-off and a personal decision...
